95 or 04 KX 250
« on: February 10, 2011, 12:35:40 AM »
Quick question for you. I am looking at getting back into dirt bike riding and have found 2 bikes. First one is a SUPER clean 1995 250 that comes with some extras (plastic,rims/tires,paddle tire). The other one is a 2004 that is in good shape (needs cleaned up) The 04 had a wobble in the rear wheel when I first looked at it and he has since tightened the spokes and says it is fine. Both of these would cost me roughly the same, Is the 04 that much better of a bike? Or would the 95 be just fine?

Thanks

Both are good model bikes, if they are the same monies & same condition the 04 model would be my choice as parts availability, resale value, etc, will favor the 2004 model. The motors are very similar in design with the biggest difference is the 95 model has a lower 1st gear which would be a big benefit if you ride in tight areas & the 04 1st gear is much closer to 2nd in ratios. The 94 Model thru 98 use the same frame design, then 99-02 had their own then the 03/04 share theirs, 05 was the last change in frame design which carries thru to the 07 model here in the states.

So to sum up I would buy the 04 with ALL being equal (if the 04 owner let the wheel get in that condition  :-P what about the rest of the bike), but if the 95 is in MUCH better shape & I planned on keeping the bike for awhile not concerned with resale in the near future then the 95 would be my pick.

Hope this Helps

One other point, after about 10 years it becomes increasing harder to find replacement parts.
Also, the aftermarket slows down the support as well, so everything else being equal I would seriously consider the 04.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.
