02 KX250 trans in an 03
« on: February 16, 2011, 01:18:37 PM »
Does anyone know if the transmission out of a 02 kx25o fit in the 03 case halfs. Im looking to go to a wider gear ratio and Ive been told that the 2002 trans is a much wider ratio than the 03. Any help here would be awesome as I have already located a trans for $200.

According to the book,
The input shaft fits 03-07 KX250
The output shaft fits 03-04 KX250

I don't know what the actual differences are so they may interchange.
Then again....
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

I respectfully disagree.
Your looking at the part diagram number, not the part number.

2002 KX250
13127    13127-1267    SHAFT-TRANSMISSION INPUT,15T    1
13128    13128-1232    SHAFT-TRANSMISSION OUTPUT

2003 KX250
13127    13127-1303    SHAFT-TRANSMISSION INPUT,15T    1
13128    13128-1265    SHAFT-TRANSMISSION OUTPUT

DOAH!

It might work.
Worst case you can always re-sell it if it won't.

From what I have read on Thumper Talk, the complete trans from a 91-94 KDX250 will fit in a 92-04 KX250. The primary gear(I think) and complete clutch have to be used from the KDX. There is a guy on there in the Kawi 2st forum that is putting the KDX trans into his 03 bottom end.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

Nope.
All I'm saying is the book shows these shafts for the years shown will fit.
Beyond that you either have to know someone who has tried it or go for it and see what happens  :-D

Steve, they will fit but you will not gain a wider ratio box with the 02 trans. Both the 02 and 03 have exactly the same 1st 4th and 5th gear ratios.

I ditched my 99 trans for an 02 trans. That made a significant difference as the 99, 00 and 01 trans are close ratio.

If you run the older KDX trans, you will run the risk of snapping the mainshaft at the bearing where it reduces down to accept the clutch hub bearing - as I have done in the past.

If you do install the 02, I would be interested in buying the 03 parts as they will fit my "doctored" trans.
