Newly restored 500 not running strong
« on: February 06, 2011, 05:08:45 AM »
Ive just restored an 89 500 and rode it first time yesterday and it felt weak and gutless. The bike ran fast but was like riding a smooth 250. The motor has been fully rebuilt, carb serviced, new Boyesen rad valve, moose torque spacer, new stock exhaust etc.

I have checked the KIPS is working and it seems to be. The over closing mod has not been done so I will do this. Removed spark plug and its very wet and not tan at all after a 20 min session. Could jeting be the problem?

all stock settings

168 main
58 pilot
1.5 turns on air screw
New fuel shutoff valve and floats set to 18mm.

Bike starts well. Took a while to clear out but does not scare you at all. Starting to acratch my head now so any help is appreciated.

check the power valves . when i rode my restored 89 250 for the first time it was flat too , reason was the power valve shaft arm that is under that silver cover was stiff, so what i did was put oil on that shaft and worked it in and out and that fixed it

somtimes engines can feel abit slugish after a rebuild, but this sounds more than that. 1 thing that springs to mind is blocked or restricted muffler/silencer. quick test: remove the silencer and try it. i would say the jeting, even if slightly wrong would not cause the power loss you speak of. it may be a case of going through every thing again
