What skid plates do you guys like best?
« on: May 28, 2010, 06:50:17 AM »
I just posted on the "wanted" forum that I'm looking for a skid plate for my '91 500. If I buy a new one, I was just curious which ones had better design, fitment, price. I see there are lots of them on E-bay that are the bottom only type and do not have the tabs/ears on the sides to protect the water pump, etc. I'm thinking about trying the 500 in an AWRCS race sometime soon here and want to make sure it's protected first.

Utah Sport or Moose have the best metal and build quality I have seen.

I put a Moose on mine this winter. I am fully pleased, with no negatives so far... but I haven't tried any others to compare it to.  It fit without modification, but did take some fine adjustment to where it wouldn't hit the water pump or stator cover. I was able to adjust it though. The holes are slotted so it can move around quite a lot before tightened down.

As a tip that I learned the hard way,  cut a wedge of dense rubber and wedge it between the skid plate wings and the parts they are trying to protect, waterpump etc.  It supports the skid plate and makes it infinitely stronger.  Otherwise the "wings" can get bent in and put cracks or holes in the parts they are meant to protect.  Such a little thing makes such a big difference.
