1999 kx 250 motor

So a friend of mine needed a complete wire kit for his 91 kx 250. i found a guy on craigslist selling parts for a 93 kx 250 and he went over and picked up the wire kit for 30 bucks and a complete motor for a 99 kx 250... he called me and asked if i wanted a spare for my 00 kx 250. im thinking that its the same motor? should i get it. he told me $120.00 for it.

 The only way I know of cross referencing parts is to open two windows side by side and look at the different parts diagrams and the #'s.   I do know that a set of cases alone (if the #'s match)  could easily be $100.00.
  Check some of the #'s for fitment and have a look at the engine before you spend any cash.

The case numbers and the cylinder numbers are not the same from 1999 to 2000. But ... don't let that stop you. I have a 2002 trans in my 1999 cases. Perfect fit! They changed the selector mechanism for the 2000 models but it all fits in the same cases. The KX250 has the same conrod dimensions from 1978 to 2007. The bore and stroke is the same from 1992 to 2002. The Wiseco clutch baskets are the same from 1992 to 2005 and their pistons are the same from 1993 to 2001.
I'm not sure why the case numbers aren't the same - there will be some minor difference somewhere but I'd doubt that its that important.
My understanding is that the 99, 00 and 01 bikes were pretty much the same. The major difference going to 02 was going back to a more normal trans ratio spread rather than the close-ratio trans of the previous 3 years
