What the h*** is up with the '85 carb
« on: February 11, 2009, 01:57:48 AM »
just bought what I thought was an '86 kx500,  found out it's an '85.  That carb has a #350 main jet, #35 pilot.  I'm at 5000 ft. Is this jetting at all right for this altitude?  I thought for sure this bike would be power wheelie prone.  from what I heard, the earlier 5hundo's were more violent.  I checked the reed block and it's all good. compression is great.  i'll check the gearing and get back with ya'.  just wanted to know if anyone has any jetting for this year bike, this altitude, all the jetting  specs i've found are for '88 and newer(different carb).  I found it hard to belive that this thing can run well with a main jet hole the size of a pencil lead.

I have an 86, and am riding at around 2000 ft.. I have a 340 or a 350 and a 40 pilot in mine, cant remember which one right now. I would think that your main would be a little rich.

85 was a non power valved motor, they didn't have the bottom end of the 86 and up (KIPS valved Motor) 86 also was the first year of a rear disc brake.

how well does your 85 run compared to a cr500?  any powerwheelies?  also, do you run aftermarket reeds, hotter plug, or anything?
