Hello from Carson City Nevada!
« on: January 20, 2009, 02:09:16 AM »
Hello, currently I ride an XR650L, and like to restore old bikes. I also moderate on another bike site, so I'll cause no trouble!

I love my L, but want something lighter and faster in the desert. I found several KX500's In my area, and am going to buy one soon. Possibly this weekend.

I also plan to plate the bike here(if it's still possible). Can someone point me in the right direction to finding stator output, turn signal setup, etc. for street use?

Thanks all,

Rich Hardcastle

Welcome to the site, after wrestling that xr around, you will love the power and light weight of a KX500. I believe the KX500 is rated about 220 lbs. I know that 650 has some power, but just wait until you WOT the 500.
You can add a lighting coil , just use the search function and there should be more than enough information. Several guys on here have converted thier KX500 to street legal and will probably help you out.
There is a banjo bolt with a brake light switch built in, that simply bolts on, easy update for brake lights.

I see a section for engine mods, but is there a section for other mods? Mods already done, or are they just mixed in with everything else?

At the top of the page under the heading is a search tab. Click that and type in your search word.  ie "street legal" "lighting coil" "turn signals"  that should work.
If not just post here again.

Welcome Martinfan30 I frequent the other forum you moderate and ride a XRR. I lurk here a lot and try to pickup info. These guys are the best resource for K5 info. I got a KX250 but need a 500. Hope you find a nice K5.

 Welcome Martin,
I have an '85 628 Red Pig and a 2000 kx500, Had to let go of the '85 CR500 to pay for the kids 2nd semester at school.
( I'm Looking for a '89-'01 CR and BRP 650R but the wife doesn't know it )
But I digress...
Any way, Wait 'til you get a-hold of a KX.  The CR hit harder than my Kx, but the KX is more fun to trail/singletrack.
The BRP's are just a different animal, don't have anything against them, but jumping on a big Ring-Ding is a blast.
Throttle control is probably the best advice I can give you swapping over from a thumper.
Don't Whack open the throttle until your in fourth 'til you see what she can do, she ain't no two-fiddy.

Thanks for the advise fellas. The 650's are a different beast. I'll keep that in mind when I swing a leg over my new to me KX5.

  Congrats Martin :-D
I don't think you'll regret buying her.  Should look pretty next to BRP.
  Christmas Colors !
You might remove the rubber cover on the KIPS rod, You should be able to move it smoothly.
warm her up , roll the throttle to check for the arm to move with throttle/engine revs.
After you get to know each other and you get a little more intimate,
Have a look at the operation of the KIPS, pull the Pipe and take a peek through the exhaust,
pull the control rod out and  Wiggle the Main exhaust "Flap" for play,
and of course, "While your at it", you might pull the carb & check the condition of the reeds.
  Take Care,

Congrats! Looks like it came with lots of goodies and she's had some money spent on her. I knew right away when I first bought my K5 that this could be the last bike I ever need. Enjoy that thing!

Thanks fellas! Will check the rod tonight. I know I am probably going to just replace the reeds. The boot is cracking.
