4TH GEAR IS GONE!
« on: September 23, 2003, 02:37:19 AM »
I FIRED UP MY 86 KX500 A FEW DAYS AGO AND WENT FOR A SPIN.  WHEN I SHIFTED INTO 4TH IT FELT LIKE THE CLUTCH WAS SLIPPING BUT WHEN I WENT INTO 5TH IT ACTED NORMAL.  THE NEXT TIME I FIRED IT UP, 4TH GEAR IS NON-EXISTENT.  I FIGURE THAT SOMETHING (PIECE OF METAL?) HAS MADE ITS WAY INTO THE TRANNY AND TAKEN OUT 4TH.  ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT.

Hard luck...! Drain the trans oil and look for metal flakes/chunks. Sounds like it's time for tranny surgery...

JB,
There's a good chance that you rounded the dogs on 4th gear. The "fingers" that cause one gear to lock into place can get worn and cause the very problem you're dealing with.

You may not find any obviuose damage until you pull hte tranny and unspect the edges of the dogs.

Good luck,

Manny

p.s....at least you didn't have a gear sieze "onto" the gear shaft. I just did and you can't believe the parts list! You're probably looking at a gasket set and a gear or two.

i think teamgreen is right about rounded gear dog.If its not that itsprobably broken or bent shift fork.Eitherway if you drain the oil and make sure theres no Chunks of  metal floating around engine you can still ride bike[just no 4th gear] until you have time to pull motor apart and fix tranny.
