Jetting advice needed for 2001 KX250
« on: April 12, 2008, 04:55:18 PM »
I am helping a neigbour jet his 2001 KX250.  Carb has a TPS and a electronic power jet. Any differences to watch out for when jetting with the power jet carb?   I haven't ridden the bike yet but he is describing what sounds to me like detonation at WOT.  I went through the carb today. Settings are: 155 main 48 pilot, needle all the way down, float level was OK.  This is for 2000' and low 70F temps. Manual says stock is 160/52.  If someone could suggests some settings that they use it would be a big help. Also, what are the chances that the power jet is not opening?  Is there an easy way to tell?  Thanks. Cam.

I ran a 158 and a 48, at 3300 feet. Did you pull the power jet out to make sure it wasn't plugged? It's in the base of the carb and should screw right out. As I recall the power jet activated 4-6000 rpm and shutdown at around 8000 rpm. Any chance somebody played with the timing? maybe advanced a bit to far? I can't ever remember my 01 detonating.
Live today, for tomorrow may never come

Thanks Don,
It didn't occur to me to pull it out and check for pluggage (Doh). Funny, I checked everything else but not that...Yet.   That is a good point about the timing, an ex-racer owned the bike previously so it is a possibility.  I got him to pickup a 158 so we should be in the ballpark.  Elevation range here is about 2000 to 5000 without pushing it so your 3300' settings should be good here. I will ride it next weekend.  Had to get a final ski weekend in before the hill closes.  Thanks. Cam.

Thanks Don,
The 158/48 works great. The bike now runs better that it ever has.  I also set his air screw which was waay off. Plug looks good. Cam.
