Dude,

Order a piston kit for the 88-2004 models. I have an 87 500 and the only thing they changed was they added a second ring. I used a 88-2004 piston and rings set for the last year and half with great results. I just replated my cylinder and installed another 88-04 piston/ring set.

aroulette,

Go to denniskirk.com and order a catalog. Denniskirk.com has UFO brand raditor shourds, side panles,front/rear fenders, and front number plates, along with lower frok/disc guards for our bikes. IMS makes a 4.2 gallon tank for our bikes(not listed on their website) Denniskirk.com sells them. EBC makes brake rotors for our bikes you can get the front one from rockymountainatv.com the rear you will need to go to EBC's web site and send them an e-mail for the part number and you can order though them. I had the part number but lost it. I will be needing a new rear rotor but money is tight from engine rebuild. Rockymountainatv.com has front and rear brake pads for our bikes. Order yourself a kick starter for an 04 500(bikebandit.com). The old style will break mine did. The 88-04 rod kits by IMS work great in our bikes, 88-04 crank bearings are the same, clutch kits for 88-04 work in our bikes. Reeds for the new 500 are the same as our bikes, 88-04 new exhuast pipes will work but you will need to weld a mounting tab on the lower part of the frame. 88-04 bike had an extra mouting tab after the pipe came out of the cylinder. Pro Circuit makes pipes for our bikes(not listed on the web site) I called them and had one four days later. I'm running a FMF Power core silencer for an 88-04 model. Our bikes have the CR Style front brake routing. New brake lines will work(I'm running a stainless braided rear line for an 90-04 bike) but 90-04 bikes have a longer front brake line that's to long. I'm running a Works Connection skid plate for an 88-04 bikes works great no mods. to get it to fit. denniskirk.com has seat foam for our bikes.
I had a customer seat cover made. I have a new 85 model cover made ceet racing that I may sell you will be the first to know. Our clutch cable is diff. from the new models. Ours is just alittle shorter. I'm still working on foot pegs. White brothers offers weld on tabs for newer 500's which will allow our bike to use newer style pegs(summer project). Chain and sprockets are the same as the 88-04 500's. Go to allballsracing.com they have wheel bearings, lower shock bearings, and lower link bearings, swing arm bearings, steering stem bearings for our bikes. Throttle cables are diff. I got one off e-bay for 10.00 buck still in o.e.m bag. Our carb is diff. I will try and find my post on here about that. Another member here is running our carb on a newer 500 and he posted some links about our carb. Sorry for the long post if there is something I left out please ask I may have some info.

Thanks. I didn't write any of this stuff down when I started restoring my bike so it's all up in 6 MB memory bank. I'm also running an 89 front end on my bike bolted right up. If you can compare the 86 piston to the 88-04 then you could see if it will work, all my reseach was fitting 88-04 stuff on my 87. I'm running an 04 kick starter (the updated one) bolted right up. Also I'm running a 88-04 clutch hub, looking to 88-04 clutch basket. Good luck finding parts if I can help let me know. EBC still makes brake rotors for your bike and mine, go to their web site and contact them.

What he saying is that MOST parts for the kx 500 will fit all years from 88-04.  They have changed the bike so little that the majority of the parts are universal.
