I have just bought a 1983 kx500 and it has two teeth missing on the kickstart idler gear. I have been unable to find an original idler gear anywhere and I’ve read that the complete kickstart shaft and the idler gear from later models can be substituted. Can anyone confirm if this is correct and what other parts may need to be changed. The later idler gear seems to have one tooth less, 26 instead of 27, so I can’t see how that can still work with the original gear on the clutch basket of the 1983 model. Do I need to change the clutch basket, and maybe even the primary gear. Hopefully I am able to use the later kickstart shaft and idler gear as right or wrong I have already bought them. Any information would be much appreciated.
