I had my eye on the complete 1991 kx 500 engine for $1700.00, that's on ebay. ( There's a running 96 kx 500 for $1500.00 in my area though)

I prefer a complete engine (all in tact). I tried mixing & matching a bottom end to a different jug before, all types of leaking and the bike sputtered badly.

I was offered a 606cc 92 kx 500 engine for $2800.00. (why would I put a built, hill climbing motor, in a $500.00 bike??)

Another gentleman wanted to come look at it today around 3 pm (don't know where he got the idea that I would be available at that time?) Some of us have to work for a living. He scoffed when I said I wanted $600.00 as she sits.

I'm not going to let this bike tie my head into a pretzel. If I can find a reasonably priced, stock, complete running engine, i'd spring for it.

If you were local I'd offer 500 for it and be prepared to shell out 600 if I had to  :lol:

I think 5-600 for this is a great deal.

I'm almost surprised at how many people have running kx 500 motors laying around there garage with no use in sight.

I do think that coming off the holidays many people just don't have the disposable income for this. Income tax time is right around the corner though, huh?  :mrgreen:

This time of the year is tough on bike sales used and new.
Wait till March or April that's when it starts firing up again.
There are a lot of guys asking a lot for their 10 year old motors.
Sure, they will start up and run and even feel fast.
But most are on the edge of needing a full rebuild.
You would be shocked at how many little parts they can suck up when you get a service manual and compare the measurements.

to be quite honest with you ive had more luck buying a whole bike and spent a lot less than i would just hunting for a motor im told is new. just a thought. but either way theres no way i could buy any motor i plan to just put in my bike without ripping off the jug before i drop it in . i need to know what that top end looks like inside and down.i agree totally with what  fox is saying below. true trueyoure going to end up opening the thing up eventually. you might as well have a spare parts bike is my thoughts. its nice to have another back tire just laying around .....hahahahaha

I myself think that's a bad idea...
I think if you're gonna spend "X" amount of dollars on another motor that "supposedly" runs...you'd be way better off just rebuilding your current motor...then you'll know what you have when you're done.
It's a huge gamble buying a motor, because you don't/won't know what condition the transmission is in. Ask me what an ENTIRE tranny costs!!! :x
I'm not sure if you could get your money back from the seller, if you install the used motor, run it for a few days or a few weeks, and the tranny fails...I believe the seller could say "tough luck, you musta done something wrong"....I'm not sure how that would play out....but you have to ask yourself, is it worth the gamble to possibly go through that aggravation...when you could've just spent that money and rebuilt the motor that's currently in your bike, and be riding worry free on something you know is all tight and fresh...and reliable.
I'm not saying listen to me...cause god knows, I don't have a clue to what I'm talkin about :roll:...you can do as you wish, but I think you should really put more thought into it 1st before taking the chance on having a 2nd bad motor...as I do know people who have gotten burnt going that route.

I just had a customer drop 800 bucks on his gears that he needed and about 225 for some shift forks.
Like Foxx I feel that if you are gonna build one, do it right.... But if your going to buy another regardless of how much you buy it for plan on dropping some coin into it in the near future.

ya know ive mismatched cases on bottom ends and have never had any problem with leaks ,as long as there is no damage where the two pieces mate.although ive used inferior sealant between the two and had oil leak into the combustion chamber. or maybe i just did a s**tty sealing job. normally i have the cases together and realize oh s**t" then rip em back apart.seal em .as far as a jug going on and sputtering and leaking .i could only think damaged mating surface or faulty base gaskets. . but as the they said it would be most economical and a make you a lot more comfortable if you were to go in the motor and see what she needs.then do it yourself. or have somebody you trust do it. i understand working on bikes is more like a labor of love. and if you have the money to through at an engine. find a bike that runs and buy it. its as much of a gamble as anything. plus youll have other spare parts,.. but i fully agree rebuild it yourself...... if you arent sure  take pics of it all on your cell phone or camera.but thats just me and you do what works and good luck.

sorry if I, or any of us come across as a bearer of bad news...we just don't want to see a fellow rider get burnt.
there's a lot good honest sellers out there, that will bend over backwards to make a customer happy.
but there's also a lot of crooked dirt bags out there too...and when you're dealing with this kind of money, it pays to be very cautious and wise. :-)
