"new" KX 500
« on: May 20, 2013, 03:07:06 PM »
I just bought a 1990 KX 500.  what do you think? i think it looks great!!   and I only paid 400.00!  Bad News?  it needs a gas tank and a throttle cable, so I don't know if it runs, but it has great compression and looks solid. I'm taking the guys word for it that it ran and he just didn't want to fix it.  he said it sat for less than 2 years and it looked it.  maybe bad engine? but maybe great deal! will find out when I get the cable and clean the carb.  Even if its broke somehow, i'm fine with it.  FIVE HUNDRED! woo.

Nice bike but I don't think it is a 1990.
Due to the conventional forks your a 89 or older.
If you post the 10th digit of your VIN we can tell you what it is.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

It is "K" and your right, its an 1989!

How does this affect me?  The years 1988-2004 are the same a lot of the time right?

I'm ok with the year, just wondering what it means if anything.  weaker front shocks I'd reckon? lol

Thanks!

Engine changes between 89-90?
Different carb and stator.

Different carb and stator.

the newer k5 engine came in 89.. and in 92 were the last motor update ; crank with more weight and they changed to statorplate with the bigger flywheel.. (the pwk 39-carb came in 88 .. 83-87 were mikuni and keihin-pe roundslide carbs installed in stock.)
the motor updates are shoulded in, that the most of the riders were going to use 500īs outside of mx-tracks for desert-races etc.

and all what i can say, only 400,- dollars is always a big deal for bikes in any conditions.

worst case scenario...you could probably double your money back by breaking it down and piecing it off....and putting that money towards a newer one.
