I had the same problem with a 2003 yz250 of mine. Does it inch forward in neutral?

Can't tell you exactly how i fixed it but i took the clutch basket out, and put it back in re tightened it and whala the noise went away and it stopped acting like it was trying to be put in gear. my thoughts were that the clutch basket was lose but maybe me turning the bike on it's side fixed it ha. good luck an keep us updated

i had the same problem on my old `83 kx250... the former owner didnīt built one of the screws in, that securing the bearing, where the change drum sits. the drum was a little wander right and left so times and put a gear alone one., and so made it a 5 meter jump forward. i fixed it and changed the 3.Gear and some other parts, of which broke down due to this missing screw. and its running great.

I think You Should split the case and take a look to the tranny to find the problem...
