Might be worth checking the bottom of your cases for anything that could've gotten wedged between the crank and cases.
Years ago I was putting a 93 250 back together, and somehow accidentaly I must have dropped a hose clamp down in the cases before putting the jug on.Never even thinking the reason I was missing a clamp was because it fell in the bottom of the cases,I just got another and continued assembly.
Pretty much the same thing you're describing....it ran, then stalled, then while kicking it over,it locked up...tight.I pulled off the mag cover and grabbed the magneto by hand and turned it backwards as hard as I could...and it released, with a little clink noise.I knew I had to yank the motor out at that point and pull it apart.Once I got the jug off,I shined a light down in between the rod to the bottom of the cases....guess what I found....yup,my missing hose clamp.Luckily I was able to grab it with a long pair of Hemostats...put it back together, and it was fine after that.
Not saying this is what your problem is...but worth a quick look into the bottom of the cases.
