Engine locked up.

Very odd today. Never experienced this before. The engine has had an odd "tinking" for some time now. I took it out today for the second time this year. I warmed the bike, and took it out for a spin. it was running very strong. About 5 mins max into the ride, the bike felt completely bogged down and died. I kicked it over, took off again and about 30 sec same thing. As I started to kick it again, something definitely didn't feel right in the engine. It almost felt like huge amounts of pressure (almost like the exhaust pipe was blocked) keeping the engine from turning over. I tried to kick it over and the engine locked up. But it never sound or felt like metal on metal. I pushed it back to the truck. The cylinder was not scorching hot at all. I let it sit for about 20 mins until it was nice and cool. Took the spark plug out and the engine was still locked. So I put it in gear and gently bumped it forward, still locked, bumped it backwards and the engine unlocked!!!! Then it kicked over nicely again w/o the spark plug in. :? I decided to put it back together and try to start it. It started and ran fine!!!! (only let it run for about 30 sec).  WTH??? I decided to tear the top end off anyways. There was very, very minimal scoring on the cylinder wall at best. BUT, I found my tinking noise. The cylinder/piston has a few thou of slop in there, hence the slap/ tinking noise. I'm going to do a compression test tomorrow. But it does still feel pretty good. I would have to say 125psi plus. Any thoughts? Power valve issue? This is boggling to me.

BTW. its a 99 kx 250 running klotz 50:1 maintained very well.

Might be worth checking the bottom of your cases for anything that could've gotten wedged between the crank and cases.
Years ago I was putting a 93 250 back together,and somehow accidentaly I must have dropped a hose clamp down in the cases before putting the jug on.Never even thinking the reason I was missing a clamp was because it fell in the bottom of the cases,I just got another and continued assembly.
Pretty much the same thing you're describing....it ran,then stalled,then while kicking it over,it locked up...tight.I pulled off the mag cover and grabbed the magneto by hand and turned it backwards as hard as I could...and it released,with a little clink noise.I knew I had to yank the motor out at that point and pull it apart.Once I got the jug off,I shined a light down in between the rod to the bottom of the cases....guess what I found....yup,my missing hose clamp.Luckily I was able to grab it with a long pair of Hemostats...put it back together,and it was fine after that.

Not saying this is what your problem is...but worth a quick look into the bottom of the cases.

Had that happen on my K5 right after I got it.  Ended up being the main bearings.  The cage on the bearing was coming apart and caused the engine to lock up for a second.  After asking around, I guess it is not that uncommon on worn out main bearings.

Thx for the feed back so far. I just did a compression test. It's @ 135psi. Yes, it is a little on the low side. I'm going to pull the jug off now and see if I can feel any play in the crank, although it is not showing an "normal" signs of bottom end issues.

And that hose clamp story is something I would do, but I have't been in side the engine in over 30hrs. Lol. Thx again!

Sounds like what happened with my 00 kx250 before the cheapie rebuild  :-(
A new bottom end, a new top end, some trans bearings, and we were back on the trails...
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

Well, I came up with a temporary solution to my problem. I was looking in the classifieds for a cylinder and came across this. I'm the owner of a very clean, almost all original 2002 KX 250 now. I have mental issues. Lol

Haha...thx. I will put the 99' up for sale. It brings a tear to my eye, but it may just have to go as a parts bike.  :cry:

Just think of the joy it will bring to 50 or so other guys who can fix their rides for a lot less then the dealers charge....  :-)
Where abouts do you live and how much do you want for it as is?
