Has anyone ever ( no bull$%*t ) ran a KX 500 past a radar gun on pavement ? top speed, not 5th gear 5 seconds long, i mean full open for a 1/2 to one mile. I've done it many times on the ice  but never had the tools to measure it true. I can blow an 800 triple sled away on a holeshot and easily hang with em at top speeds. But this only happens a few months a year on the ice. Mass. doesn't have extensive open areas to get going this fast. A couple of my buddies want to drag race a 1/4 mile in the spring. I will also be racing the other dirtbike for top speed.
I'll be strapped to my 01 KX500
the contenders are 00 KTM 540 EXC, and YAMAHA RZ-350 street bike.
I'm not really into this kind of stuff, I know the big green will smoke most bikes into top end melt down. But this is a friendly one shot deal and it sounds like to much to pass up good match.

I've done it with 15/45 gears on the 5 mile long back straight at Snowflake in Aripine, AZ. Back stretch top speed was 111 mph, oh yeah but that was on dirt not pavement. Oops

HOLY COW and I thought I was flying at 82mph when I was clocked that is
awsome. As far as the racing goes,we have a dirt drag strip that I race on alot it is a blast. They have a bunch of 4 wheelers and 4cyl. street bikes with paddle tires that race and I currently hold second fastest time on the
track. The only time faster was by 2/10th and it was a worked over 1100cc
z1000.The kx5 is one quick machine. If you drag get a couple of tie downs
and hook on the handle bar and bottom of the forks to compress them down,to keep you from looping out at the start.Works like a poor man's
holeshot helper.Be careful the bike handles a little weird this way but not to
bad.Just practice slow at first!!!Also start in 3 gear with a little clutch slip,
you will be quicker even though it feels slower.Dirt drags are alot of fun
and really help you practice on your starts.

I drag race cars, but I run practically everything I own down the 1/4 mile just to see what it will do. I just got my kx 500 and I will be taking it to the track sometime this summer. My kx310 ran 79 mph in the 1/4 and 72 mph in the 1/8 with a 120 90/19 knobby and 14/50 gearing.  I never took my old cr 500 but I guess it would have run in the very high 80's or low 90's judging from the way it would pull on my 310. A kx500 with it's 14/47 gearing should run even faster.
FYI if you go here is the safety stuff your required to have (at my track anyways).
*Chainguard
*tether kill switch
*leather jacket
*no runs after dark
Next time I go I'll probably put a street tire on because you get zippy traction with a knobby if you try to launch hard, so I ended up launching really soft because I think sliiping the clucth at full throttle on pavement is too hard on them just to find out what it'll run.
We also took a banshee with pipes, air filter, .020 over it ran 67mph, I also saw a ex 400 that ran 48 in the 1/8 but he lifted before the 1/4.

Greenmonster what was the distance when you were clocked at 82mph, and was it on dirt or pavement? Do you have very aggressive gearing? I haven't had the chance to open mine up yet because of all the snow but I really hope that it is able to run atleast 90mph.
If it was in dirt that's cool I grew up doing 180 and 300ft dirt drags before developers and  population put an end to the track. There is nothing like some of the "machines" that people will bring out to a dirt drag or hill climb, I have lots of pictures and trophies from those days.

 I ran an 85 KX5 to a radar-comfirmed 93 mph after 3/4 miles to get up to speed. It was tapped in 5th. I dont remember my gearing though.
