kips for kx 500
« on: December 29, 2008, 06:19:57 PM »
I need  some advice.

K5 needs it top end.

I've taken  the kips cover off the motor and rev motor , the rod move's out ,but not far enough,
while reving motor i can move the rod even further with a large screwdriver.

Is it from the powervalve , drums amd flap pins worn out and won't allow it to open????
the motor got good compression and runs well, but  needs that extra rev power I know its got .

Low and mid range power is excellent

The last time i had it apart  i notice PV pins had a fair bit of wear on them .

I was reading one of Eric Gorr books and he  wrote , "when the drums valve  get worn the center wedge valve won't fully open , and bikes get noticeable slower"

 Dino,
Kaw Rider has a post in a recent thread about worn "flap Pins" also.
http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,5017.0.html
   you might check that out.
If I remember Eric G recommended pulling the pins out and rotating 180 deg and re-installing them for a little more service.
I'll take a peek at some sites that have parts diagrams and see if the pins are separate from the flap or it's one part.
For that matter if someone has one apart and could Measure the "Good" end Dia. and length we may be able to outsource a stronger item.
There is also a thread on the KIPS bolt length Mod that has proven to do a great job on improving power.  It doesn't allow the drum to over-rotate closing the exhaust port. You lose the "Compression Release"  effect but gain some more movement on the "Flap"    http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,1367.0.html
I don't recall anyone else having a problem with the "Drums" other than they got gummed up,  Hope this helps.

I Did the bolt modification , the piston / window mod - I  liked it

I order the drum ,flap and valves  from kaw 2 weeks ago , I will pull it all apart when recived parts,

i"ll let you know how it goes

( Its hard to to get parts in Australia - parts are on back order from  japan)

I've read all the other sites

i'm trying to shed some light on it to get the bike to rev harder

 G-day  Dino,
You have a bit more knowledge than your post led me to believe, I apologise. :|
You may want to P.M. Stewart, BDI and Doordie  (on this site) as the have a great deal of experience and are willing to share.
There are a few guys here that have in the past done some shopping for a brotha' Down Unda' and sent a "Gift"  to Oz for no more than the actual cost.
  Cheers,

thanks for that imformation i will keep that in mind.

i try to read this site daily if i'm home from work (work away)

i'm pretty sure these worn power valves are the trouble .

actuator arm is only going halfway out , hopefully with new parts it should come out all the way
i'll let you know

and thanks again

Keep us posted on how you make out. Allways nice to help a bother down under.  I rotated my PV pins 90 degrees.  Make sure you measure the stock amount that the pins protrude from the PV otherwise it is hard to press them back in the correct amount.   You should be able to simulate the PV opening after measuring the amount the actuating rod comes out when you rev it.  Then you can simulate it on the bench to confirm the exact PV opening to see if you are not opening fully. hi guys

just to let you know that what you told  me to do did help

undid actuator arm nut turned shaft  down a bit, tighten nut and test ride got top end power back

I'll check the actuator arm  out more throughly when i get time to make sure it's opening the full amount .

thanks KX Brother's

Dino

P.S

I tried a kx250 06 gear shifter on the kx500 , its about 5mm longer it shift gears easier , so it staying on there permanently.
