terraflex 150/90-18 tire
« on: April 04, 2008, 10:09:18 PM »
has anyone ran a tire this size on the k5? 150/90-18. i'm wondering if it would even clear the chain. i don't think i'll make it to the dunes this year so i plan to do some hill climbing in some very loose material and i want a really gnarly tire, and this terraflex tire is as gnarly as it gets. You need to measure the space between the chain and the swingarm 1" is roughly 1/32 shy of 25mm if that helps. Even if you have room to fit it in there I'm sure the chain is going to hit the side knobs when your riding and chew them up a little.

The Terraflex is a very heavy tire but it will clear the chain. Check out the IRC M5B it's much lighter and works just as good in loose dirt. There's plenty of surface area on the knobs to do some tire grooving for hard terrain as well.

The IRC M5B... on hard terrain... is NOT... a good idea.  Do a search for another post I did where I gave my impression of the M5B compared to the Maxxis Desert IT... both tires being compared out at Gorman, CA.

The Teraflex is a little much unless your running alcohol or Nitrous, the M5B is a great choice for hillclimbing in loose dirt.

I concur with the M5B not being the best hard packed tire. Back forever ago, I had a CR250 I had purchased used with one.. I had many wipeouts with the tire, it's like a balled tire in oil.

Indeed the M5B is a bad choice for hardpack alone, but so is the Terraflex. I assume if Maddoggy is asking about the Terraflex then he is not looking for a hardpack tire, I suggested the tire grooving for a little better crossover. The best tire for hooking up on hardpack is one that is not on the back of a 500cc two-stroke!!!  :-D :-D :-D
