what clip?
« on: April 15, 2007, 06:41:35 AM »
was going thru my carb on the '93 K5 for the first time today. and cleaned out the jets, and cleaned all the carb off all the pathways were cleaned.

a few ?'s along the way
1. didn't notice any numbers on the jets
2. something supposed to be on the 2nd clip, saw no clip, except for the one the little needle jet was hanging from, but saw no way to adjust it.
3. isn't there supposed to be a spring on the bigger screw on the left side of the carb, mine has a washer. this is the air screw right?
4. the little screw was all the way in, hell, they both were.

have a manual for the bike, but its at my friend house with the bike.

any help? :?

The needle has a series of 5 grooves in it, you can adjust the height (or clip position) by hanging the needle off the clip in another groove.

I've always been confused by the clip postion. if it says "2nd" clip, does that mean the second clip from the top or bottom of the needle?  :?

They number from the top to the bottom. Number 1 being at the top of the needle.

No that's the needle and seat . You need to pull the needle out of the slide. My needle takes a 6mm to pull the needle out of the slide. Push down to unhook the cable . Then use a 6mm to get to the needle.

oh, your talking about the needle that comes down from the throttle cable? that goes thru the screw off cap on top of the carb? if thats it, its still at my friends house with the bike. I just took the carb off and brought it home to clean.
now what about the 2 screws on the outside of the carb. I know 1 is the air screw and 1 is the idle screw right? the smaller one closer to the bowl is the air screw I'm thinkin, and it was all the way in.
the bigger one in the middle of the left side, shouldn't that have a spring on it? to hold it in place from the vibrations?

thank you...muy bueno! that helps out tremendously.

the idle screw seams to be on the other side of the carb in the picture than the one I have. and it does look like it has a spring on it. I guess mines missing the spring.

can you use a spring from a click ball point pen for the idle screw? looks about the same diameter... :|

Mad,
My 92 idle screw has a locknut but no spring. Locknut is better. It may be that the previous owner tossed the locknut so he could get the idle screw in further to get an idle (done to compensate for common too rich pilot jet - won't idle problem).  The air screw should have a spring.  A pen spring is too weak but a spring from most other carbs (from a bike wrecker??) would be fine. Cam.

ok, Cam, appreciate it. well the air screw has the spring, but the idle screw does not have a lock nut. it has a washer and thats it. got the carb back on it today, as well as the v-force reed valve. I guess I'll find a nut to fit that idle screw. we'll see if it idles. I'm just in the final stages of the rebuild, and antisipating the first start with bated breath.

MK, here's a few more web sites for your perusal (carb stuff)
http://www.duncanracing.com/techfaq/Tech_keihin-carburetion-jetting.phtml
http://www.motorcyclecarbs.com/index.cfm
http://www.carbparts.com/
http://www.jetsrus.com/main_page.htm
Sudco usually has everything in stock, however a few months ago a minimum order number was established. :-(
(ie.  you need 1 (one) DGN needle, you have to get 4. etc)  you may want to call and verify before ordering.

If you just need the springs and or an idle screw locknut, check out the local hardware store and auto supply.
I've had good luck sifting through those big bins of nuts bolts and washers for small items.
(and most are avail. in brass and stainless steel)
