had a big oops!! today
« on: March 28, 2007, 12:22:19 PM »
Yeah so i was out rideing my 97 kx500 :-D when wham it locked up tight  :-ojust about through me over the bars, luckily i was just starting to climb a hill and was in 1st. i thought for sure i seized it up but i was wrong  i picked it up off the ground. and tried to push it woud'nt roll so i reach down to put it in to nuetrol and oh crap :? thats when i noticed it. my front sprocket split right in half and stripped every single spline off of my output shaft. i was ticked :x. so i pryed and pulled till i got the pieces of the sprocket out of the chainnd pushed it bout 1 mile back home :-P. so now i need to know if anybody has an output shaft that will fit a 97 kx 5 i don't really want to go through a stealership 140$ wich aint bad but money is tight.

so does anyone know were to find a shaft or used one for a little cheaper??

thanks  :x

Hope you find the part you need. Very rare failure. No damage to the cases?

no it didn't hurt the cases. i will try to post pics later thought. i was wondering about welding the splines back in and then cutting new ones. but i don't know if the welds would hold??

You must be talking about the splines on the sprocket. Don't weld it just replace it!

I have seen this before.. Infact, I did it recently on our little Z50.. ;-) But 200+lbs stunting down the road didn't help that either...

the outer splines on the shaft are gone. it spun inside the sprocket and stripped off the splines so the shaft needs to be replaced.
