anybody know if this will work?
« on: November 15, 2006, 01:08:25 PM »
got a 2001 kx250, and need a new jug or to have mine worked. found a 99 cylinder and head from a "new take off". I've read about the cylinders slightly changing in size thru a machining run in the factory. would be a pretty good deal if it will do the job...just don't want to buy it and it sieze or some such thing. Any green words of wisdom? thanx for any help!

it got beat up pretty bad in the blowing the crap out of it incident. might be able to buy this one cheaper than getting mine plated or sleeved.

if you can get it re-sealed that would be the best route. if not then i would do a sleeve (L. A. Sleeve has a 540 kit  ). i cannt remember where i had mine resealed but they did an awsome job and it was about $100. the thing i do not like about a new sleave is that you dont get the same heat transfer as stock (that is the only reason i have not done the 540 kit).

i will see if i can find who did my cyl.

sleeving a water cooled cylinder is very bad. The sleeve does not allow the heat to transfer into the water jacket resulting in fried rings. The sleeve is steel and the normal cylinder is aluminum coated with a thin skin of either nickel and is better for the heat transfer. Sleeves were meant for steel air cooled cylinders and maybe some of the first water cooled cylinder from back in the day. It's better to get the cylinder replated. A good reputable shop can bore out the old coating, weld up any flaws and send it out to be replated.

Replate with cylinder repairs will be cheaper that buying a used cylinder. Call lukesracing.com and tell them what you have and they can give you an estimate of repair.

You may want to check www.buykawasaki.com to compare the part numbers.  You might also want to see if the Wiseco piston for each is the same model.  If it is a different diameter, then you can surely rule it out.

You might want to check out www.langcourt.com.  I called and asked them how much it was.  I was told that if it did not need to be repaired and only replated, that it was $150 (plus shipping both ways of course).

Attention he who keeps the votes, please put me down for replate and not sleeve.

An aftermarket replate is often commented as being better than the tungsten based Elctro-fusion coating from Kawasaki.

Good luck with it.
