I was curious if anybody has repaired oil drain plug threads with time sert inserts? Does anybody know what length insert is needed? Whats the best place to purchase them ?Thanks for any information.

Not sure of the length but the best deal I have found is ebay. 12mm x 1.50 is the size if I remember right. 8-10mm is all the longer I would think you would need.
$80-$90 for the kit I have seen. Good Luck!

 My '89 has a M10-1.5 plug. The aluminum boss is only 16mm in diameter. A M10-1.5 Time-Sert has a M14-1.5 outside diameter.
Doesn't leave enough material for the boss to be reliable.
 I use Heli-Coils for this application. http://www.mcmaster.com/#threaded-inserts/=44u7sw
If you're going to do the repair without disassembling the motor, rig an air hose to blow in the gearbox oil fill port while you're drilling and tapping. This will blow the chips back in your face, instead of getting chips in the gearbox.
Be sure the Heli-Coil tang is removed.

For what its worth, I just had mine repaired by running a tap all the way up into the good threads that I had left.

Time-serts are the best form of thread repair I have ever used. They requier a smaller hole then a heli coil. If you use a heli coil first  :| when it fails you will have to use a big-sert to repair the hole do to the fact that the heli coil needs a larger hole. Do the right thing  use time serts, they are worth the money. http://www.timesert.com/ watch their demo and read what they say, it's all true. I use them all the time to fix peoples screw ups.

If all you have is oil seepage coming from the drain plug, wrap the last 3-4 threads of the drain plug w/teflon tape. DO NOT over wrap with the tape, 1 wrap is sufficient.
