Would you do it again?
« on: January 09, 2019, 12:19:27 AM »
So I'm thinking about building a KX500 SM. I loved my DRZ SM but it was lacking in power, 450s require to much work and I love two strokes (Husky WR300 is my other bike) so the KX500 makes sense. That being said, to those who have done a KX500SM would you do it again?

Hi PeteFro, welcome to the site.  You've come to the right place for SM info, as several guys on the site have completed conversions.  It make take them a little while to respond, but you should get some really solid information.
Perhaps I have a dirt bike addiction?

Thanks, I'm going to look at a street plated KX this weekend.

Yes. If I was younger I would probably still have mine and would have tuned it tighter. Probably would have gotten some tickets too! Definitely not an 'only' bike, but it was fun while I had it.

I built one and also bought Brutes. I would do it all over again..
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

I had one.  I left dirt tires on it so that may change things a little.  My impression was that it was awesome for a few miles but got old quick.  If you were on a tight twisty road it was a blast.  If you were on any kind of straight away it would wind out quick.  Being stuck behind a car was awful, my bike would surge pretty good if you weren't on the gas.  Not noticeable on the dirt, but annoying in traffic ( you could tune it out but then it was a bit rich).  It wheelied everywhere which was cool, but its definitely a cop magnet.  I was always polite and am a bit older so everyone was nice enough. I thought I would ride it on the road a lot more.  At the end of the day it was cool to drive like a maniac for a few miles, but not even close to a drz.  I would not have wanted to drive it over 10 miles on the road.  Great option for connecting trails.  Awful option for actual travel.

Well thanks for the input guys. I picked up a plated clean as hell 2003 K5. I'll be SMing it just for local back roads and maybe the occasional rip to work. I'll be starting a build thread soon.
