KX500 Cramped Ergos
« on: March 18, 2012, 04:52:53 PM »
I searched, didnt get much of an answer. What is the best route to sort this bike out for a taller rider? I rode it for a while not really knowing any better. Now I have another bike too, a 250f no less, and the KX feels super cramped in comparison. I'm 6'2 with about a 34 inch inseam. I know I could make the seat taller but then I would have trouble reaching the ground and kicking it. Anyone done lower pegs? it hard? Anything else to improve the ergos?

Also, any tips for randomly dying at idle. My idle is pretty high. High enough I don't think it should die... and usually it doesn't... but sometimes it just goes kaput :( Keep raising it to ridiculous levels? I ride woods and often with much slower riders that leave me coasting or sitting still for short periods. I want to rip my hair out when it up and dies. Perhaps I just need a compression release lol.

I honestly have been looking for an answer besides taller seat myself. I'm 6'4". It's not too bad on the track but in the trails I do more sitting so I'm with ya in the cramped department. I've never liked the taller seat foam. It never feels right and it puts the center of gravity too high = confidence loss.

As far as random dying while idling... Mine occasionally does it still. Seems when you get the jetting close to perfect it doesn't idle very well. Try going up one size on the pilot jet. Seemed to work for me for the most part. I don't idle much except for initial warm up so I don't mind the occasional stall. It keeps my right leg in shape lol.
It's hard to keep a drivers license riding a 2 stroke dirt bike on the street.  If you drive within the law they are VERY boring.

What kind of bars are you running that fit you well when standing?

It never used to bother me. Problem is I'm getting spoiled by a modern fuel injected four stroke with a magic button and a much better fit for tall folks.  Its like going from a new lexus to a muscle car with loping idle, stiff clutch, and bench seat that wont go back far enough.

In addition to getting a higher seat i would suggest handle bars that are higher and have less sweep on them to help spread you out more. Also look into handle bar risers and see if you can find fastway footpegs that fit a kx500 as they are adjustable and you could set them lower.

Also most two strokes that are jetted and running properly wont sit and idle with out a blip of throttle now and then to keep the rpms up. If you watch even when the pro's ran two strokes they would not just sit and idle.

I have the Easton 1 3/8 Woods bars with the universal clamp adapter.  They have solved the "riding standing up" posture issues for me but there is still room for improvement in a couple of areas.

When sitting down the bars feel really high.  A better solution would be a compromise of pegs lowered an inch and the bars bolted to the tree without the universal adapter.  That would move the whole ergo down an inch and feel more balanced both standing up and sitting down.

I didnt like the higher seat foam solution.

It will never idle like a 4 stroke!  Keep blipping, especially on the down line!

I just put on a set of Renthal RC High bars(part# 809-01-SI-01-185) Monday, for the same reason of the "standing" issues....what a difference!!..these bars are about 7/8"-1" taller than what I had on previously.Sitting is still a little awkward only cause I'm still getting used to the change...but it's definately for the better.Everything else is is STD.
Excuse me, ma'am...but you've got extremely nice legs!!!...what time do they open???                                                                                                               https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n8tCgN3aryQ
