New to the site. Not new to motorcycles. Have had four KX500's. Current KX500 is a 2000 model I picked up with no mods and low time. Just sent the head off to Larry Wiechman to have the compression release installed. Just ordered new bars and a flywheel weight as well. No pics of the bike yet. Only rode it twice before taking it apart to send the head off. Getting older! Kicking over the KX500 Brute is not as easy as it was ten years ago when I had my last one! Live in Washington State on the West side. Made my last KX500 (1997) street legal, but with Washington's new off road conversion law this year I am sure the guy lost the plate and will have to work to get it back. Looks like a great site with lots of good info. Thanks to Danger4u for letting me in!

Soooo, took the KX for just a couple short rides before sending the head off to Larry to put a comp release put in. Excellent work, and it looks good! Rode it the first time yesterday in a gravel/rock pit after getting it back together. Running excellent. For the last ten years I have been riding a 200cc four stroke. Let?s see, the ride went something like this:
   Been riding around for a bit, feeling pretty good. ?Don?t remember these hitting this hard. Dang! Just tapped the throttle and it tore the ground up like it is looking for oil! Went up the hill climb like it?s heading for the moon! I?ll hit the whoop-tee-doo?s a little harder this time. Whoa! Little out of shape on that first one, better tap some power to straighten it out. Holy crap! That was not a tap! That was a slap, and now I am more out of shape and going faster. I?ve got it, I?ve got it, I,,,,,, Oh crap!!! Too much throttle! Hmmm, I am off the seat, the bike is sideways and laid down in the air. Why, I believe I lost it!? That is about the time the bike and I hit the ground?
Only dented the pipe, but the back tire tried to eat my leg. Can barely walk. If I did not have the comp release I would have never gotten the bike started to get it back out of the pit. No one else around to see the exhibition. Kind of wish I had a vid so I could see where it really went wrong. Dang that hurt!  :-o

  :oops:  Sorry to hear about the mis-hap Brute.
There are throttles available with a longer throw  that might help with control.
  Most throttles on MX bikes are 1/4 turn idle to wide open. 
It's alot easier to control the bike for an Old Codger like me with a Half turn.  There are (I believe) 3/4 turn's available if the 1/2 isn't enough.
  I'm willing to bet when you were a kid you had ridden a bike at one point that seemed like you had to get another hand-full to get the bike wide open.   Almost like you had to lean to the right and stick your elbow down toward the front axel!  Oh yea...wide open on a QA-50. Now that's livin' on the edge  :lol:
 ... Anyway...
   The other problem with a 1/4 turn is trying to hang on to the bike and hitting a nice whoop and cracking the throttle open even further...thus increasing your velocity...and the death grip tightens..
   I think I remember  repeating the scenario until gravity,velocity and terrain separate rider and bike... :|
At least when I got on a 500 after a 15 or so year hiatus from riding..

the first day I bought mine 6 yrs ago and went out,had 30 mins of scaring myself sh%tless, then I very nearly put it straight back up for sale,before I'd even put it in the garage for the 1st time. after not riding anything for ten yrs, it felt a bit loopy!  SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad I didn't.  :evil:

I had an rm250 and an rf900r at 17 yrs old, with a loan from daddy( no interest mind) but then had misss Kwakman junior 2 mths  after my 19 birthday and another in 2006, so that was that!

As I sit here fairly sh*tfaced with the drugs the doc gave me and some apple brandy, I should have switched area's like I thought about before the 'fall'. The bike needs a more open area, and I was in a fairly tight area. Might have been fine after I had ridden for a while, but not right from the start. I have not been used to instant power on tap like that for ten years or so, and it showed. I will probably hit the desert or open dirt roads next time until I get used to it again. May change the throttle as well, but will ride it at least once more first. I have watched some motocross vids and have a pretty good idea of what happened from what I remember and where the bike and I ended up. Sucks! Hurts worse at 57 then it did even ten years ago! d**n, that power is addictive! Have given some thought of putting the KX500 engne into a Ninja 250 frame. Could be fun!

 :-o OUCH! that looks painful... I did a real number on myself on my second trip out on my 500 broke a vertebra, cracked three ribs and had a nasty scrape on my hip, it was not fun! it was real fun right befor the lights went out though! lol heal quick
