Title: engine freaks only
Post by: kwakman on March 21, 2010, 10:43:38 PM
just as the US of A has the detroit diesel,i thought i'd share the british equivalent.in england in the 50's, steam loco's were being replaced by diesels(proper diesels, not 450f's) and some very clever nutcase came up with the Deltic engine.this was an opposed piston, 2 stroke 36 cylinder,72 piston engine in the shape of a 'D' (hence deltic, from greek letter delta).imagine a v12 with no heads,on the left bank you place another v12 piston to piston, and the same on the right bank.these top v12's also share a bank.these engines produced 1650 hp each and each loco had 2, so 3300bhp all in(in 1956!)without turbos, only centrifugal scavenging blowers.google search 'napier deltic engine' and have a look.you wont feel so bad when you've got to change a piston or get your cylinder replated............ :-o

i might also add these engines were originally designed for use in ww2 fast attack motor torpedo boats and the like, and come in differing capacities and sizes. I wonder if i could get one in an aluminium frame.........

What an interesting design! I have been an engine nut for 45 years and have seen a couple of designs this year I was not aware of. Fun stuff! That this one was in production and is still in use is cool as well. Thanks for sharing!

And here is a link to the guy that made a complete scale running (to be) model of this type of engine. Be fun to build a small one and put it in a bike frame!
