Title: Stripped Drain Plug
Post by: blueoval on December 05, 2009, 08:42:59 AM
Does anyone know the best way to break the tang off of the helicoil once it's in the case.  Trying to get this done so I can go riding tomorrow.  I encountered a stripped case in the transmission yesterday.  Thanks in advance.  Ted.

I would use a needdle nose sence you do not want the tang in the case. Bend it so that you do not pull or distort the threads.

Once I have the helicoil inserted I usually grab it with  the tip of some needlenose pliers and twist.  The tang has grooves cut in it to make it break off easily. Cam.

Thank you very much.  Just finished drilling it.  My snap-on needle nose pliers don't fit up the coil and leave enough room to open the ends and grab the tang.  Oh, well.  Guess run over to OSH or something.  Do you mean bend it back and forth slowly so It doesn't distort the threads?  Just trying to fully understand what you mean so I don't screw it up.  thank you so much for the quick reply.  ted

There will not be any back and forth. Like Cam said, it will break tright off.
