Title: sand prep

looks like im hitting up pismo beach the weekend.  my tire will be mounted as of tomorrow and the pre-filter is in...what other prep does my bike need to survive the sand?

WD-40 the snot out of it.... that salty sand will eat the bike alive......    WASH IT LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER WASHED IT  the second you get home. then coat the entire bike in penitrating oil...  or every single piece of hardware, etc etc will be thrashed....

I normaly keep a can of wd40 in camp    and hose the bike down with it after every ride... (not the brakes).......    I like WD40 for this as it tends to dry up and not attract sand like other stuff will....

You already got some awsome advice but I would like to throw in my two cents. I would go up three full sizes on the main jet from what you would typically run. You are going to be at sea level and putting the bike under a big load. It's going to want to burn some fuel and if you don't give it to it it will burn the engine. For example, 168 jet would go to a 175 jet. Also If your bike is a stock compression bike it will be very happy and cooler running if you put some trick 100 octain fuel in it.

im going to pismo with my family and riding buddies next weekend(april3-5th). i have never been. i have heard there are lots of retards there and flags are a must

I'll be over there the 9th and 10th.  Also getting mine prepped.  The ol 250 was prepped for it, just picked my k5 yesterday so trying to get it situated before hand.  Get a nice flag holder and a large diameter flag (just a recommendation), WD40 is DEFINITELY your friend.  Make sure you put grease between the filter and the box, it'll trap any sand that MAY get in there so you can clean it later.  Sand is a *&!@# on parts out there, clean the hell out of it, along with those pucks that cover the wheel bearings.  Be safe, and have a blast man!

so im going to pick up a paddle tire tonight& in stall it tommorrow.my chain is about half waypiont on the  adjustment, will i need to put a link in my chain? i dont have a mud flap(if that gives any room)

i think there is another link for a shock cover if your mud flap has to be removed.  may want to increase compression clickers to better handle the sand

thanks, but i made a flag mount in the shop(looks homemade but it will work). thanks on the other info. i will check it out :-)

my advise would be the same as BDI's, to not go cheap on the fuel. you will want all the power your bike can give and pump gas won't cut it. if your not running the mudflap/shock protector then i would for sure come up with something to protect the shock shaft from sand damage. you'll definitely want to clean that salty sand off of everything you can when you are done riding.   MADDOGGY

having done a few beach races over in UK ive found a few tips to keep you going,1, find a old bicycle inner tube 1"diameter and cut into 3 2"lengths put them over your kickstart pivot and both footpegs,2, use filter skins if your out there for a while,easier to pull off and keep going then to fanny around changing filters and risk sand in the carb,3, use a 1.8bar rad cap cos its gonna get hot! 4,use a pair of the old ladies tights over your rads keeps most of the sand out and you can just rip them off when full up! 5, take spare pair of pads for the rear(sand eats them for breakfast) hope any of my ideas help you!!!! :evil:

Save the beast.  Just rent when you get there.  Worth every penny.
