Title: FAT PADDLE KX500
Post by: bykas on January 23, 2009, 05:20:52 PM
Hello, I'm new to the site and have something you KX500 enthusiast might like. I call it my FAT PADDLE KX500. This  bike handles and corners unbelievably well at the dunes. There is no squirley unpredictable handling like most bikes in the sand. I'm runing a custom jackshaft swingarm with a 22x11x10 8 paddle, the traction is insane. In the front I'm running a 16 inch rim with a 120 tire, barley fits in the forks but works perfect. Nothing can touch it at the dunes. Will post new pics when I get my new graphics. Let me know what you guys think.

I absolutely love it!!  I've always wanted to try something like this for the KX5.  Did you build the swingarm?  Where can I buy one?

Wow its a super motard for the dunes.. I love it.

One question though, do you do much jumping?
Here in the Southern California dunes, I normaly jump into the BIG bowls.... And needles to say, I have tagged the frame on the ground more than I wish to admit (due to jumping at an angle (dune like a wall) and bottoming the bike (old suspension at the time)....  It hurts.

Just the first thing to come to my mind when I see how low it is.   Would be a Killer dune shreader though, and a blast in the nice twisty sections...

It must wheelie like a dream with that back tire... Im jellous..

Actually the picture is a little deceiving. It still has 13" of clearance which is 1" more than my trx250r dune quad. I'm 46 so don't do the big air jumps anymore. On small to intermediate jumps it works just fine, no problems. I actually try to stay planted on the dunes as much as possible and just blow by everyone.  It is an absolute blast in the twisties up and down the walls.  Your right about the wheelies it will do them all day long in 5th just cracking the throttle. It does have a 540 big bore kit which makes it that much funner :-o.

Man that's to cool.  I've been looking for a Yamaha Big Wheel for sometime now.  They are around but most of the time they are worn out.  They made an 80cc, 200cc and a 350cc.  They only made them for a few years, I know one of the years was 1986.
Keep us posted when your ready to offer your kit to the public.

I just receintly sold a BW350 that is how this project came to mind. They are ok hunting and trail riding bikes but unless you put a big motor in it I would not suggest it for the dunes. They are severly under powered and weigh over 300 lbs. Pretty much big turds in the sand. I will let everyone know when we are ready to sell the FAT PADDLE conversion kits.

i remember riding a front wheel conv. back in the 80's yes i am old like others on here  :-D nice job and it looks like a lot of time and pride went in to it . atv ribbed tire on the front with an atv paddle on the back would stop the sinking in the sand and i bet it stands up by its self in the sand better when you stop. by the way skate track tires just built a new 23 inch rear paddle tire  for use on high powered quad's and i am sure they would let you use one for your dirt bike conversion.

I would seriously like to get a swingarm kit like that.  My 500 is a fun ride in the dunes but the rear tire is always spinning with any amount of throttle, more traction is the key and it just looks like a thrill to ride!

man i was just on the DDR web site and what do i see. a new topic titled
(fat paddle kx500
conversion kit)
looks like a cut and paste from this post even the same user name?

i had an idea to do something like this not to long ago but my buddy Brian told me it was stupid and i didn't take it to far after that. IMO the worst part about dunning a bike is the way they want to go in the sand and not on the sand. floatation is key in the sand and it looks like this fat paddle has answered that. my idea was to use a supermoto set up like you have on the front but then have a supermoto fatty rear slick cupped (like a 170/55-17). i was looking at 125/??-?? for the front. how dose the front handle? with my skinny mx front in the soft the sand just swallows it. and with the fattest 19 inch paddle on the back the bike goes down to the swing arm before it goes forward. you have incouraged me to revisit my idea of a supersandmoto

I'm running a 16" 120 tire (5"wide) and it handles awesome. Great flotation with aggressive cornering. With the big paddle in the rear you better be hanging on when launching cause this thing  hooks hard. This is a roadrace bike for the sand.

We have been pretty much blown away by the responce from the internet and the first show we took the bike to. We are working over time on fabricating kits. We are projecting possibly end of March for the K5. We will put a list together of what exactly the kit consists of and the projected price and let you know sometime this week.

Do you think the tire on the 450 works better being on the rim backwords? I'm not trying to be a smart ass, I was just wondering. I'm a farm boy from way back and I know tractors don't do as well when the tires are flipped.  :|
Title: Re: FAT PADDLE KX500
Post by: Danger4u2 on June 19, 2009, 01:02:28 AM
Yes, I noticed that also.  Tractor tires are designed to work the mud out from under the tire to get to solid ground.  When they are on back wards it works it under the tire to the center.  That lifts the tire giving less traction.  There may be a reason we are missing.  Front or backwards it's got to be a big smile factor.  I'm, for now, setting my bike for sand only.  His stock wheel will be a 10".  He is offering the 12" wheel, as an option with the tractor tire.  From the video it looks to be real fun.
Having worked in the auto restoration industry for years I have developed a critical eye for detail.  It does not matter how cool I make my bikes look or run.  My eye goes to the off centered rear fender or the microscopic dent in the pipe.  It's kind of a compulsion.  Man a new ban.  No talk of religion, politics' or MENTAL ISSUES.
In no way am I an expert but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

You guys are good. We had the tire mounted and didnt even notice it was backwards till after we had it on the bike and took some pictures. We switched it around and it works awesome up it the muddy woods in our area.
