Title: kx100 rebuilt knocking

I just put back together a 01 kx100 for my son.  New piston, rings, shaft, little and big bearings, and stator.  ( i broke the stator popinh the magnito. the bike rolls over fine and shifts well.  It is hard to start and when it starts it knocks and runs bad.  I am afraid to idle more than a few seconds.  could thisbe timing of the new stator?  Is setting the timing as simple as loosening the stator and turning it.  I am going to try this when I get home tommorow, is there something else I should check,  such as exaust valve.
