Title: What GPS to buy
Post by: KXcam22 on November 07, 2006, 11:33:14 AM
Hi all,
I am looking at getting portable GPS to carry while riding so I can explore my area further.  Any suggestions on brands and models would be a huge help.  I need something with a good antenna that will work in trees. A compass and altimeter would also be nice.  Any personal experiences would be welcome. Thanks. Cam.

I'll check into the GPS units the guys on the Dual Sport rides use.  I want 1 also.  One of the guys had one and said next time we get together he will show me how to use it.  Last weekend at the river a guy was using his to clock his speed on his quad.  There are a lot of different handle bar mounts also.

I spent about 2 months searching for info on which GPS was the best to get....
in the end I went with the Gamin Quest. It mounts on the bikes easy enough
and has not given me any grief yet (1 year of lots of use).
I use it on my XR650R so I don't get lost down at Big Bend and on all the DS type
rides we do. The battery lasts for about 10 to 12 hours and it has 128 meg built in
memory. The expandable units cost quite a bit more, bit I have found that 128 is
more than enough. For example, I can store all detailed maps between Frisco, Texas
and St Pete's, Florida and there is still spare space, so more is not needed.
heres a pic of it on my XR :
