Title: Site Newbie, not bike newbie
Post by: 2001KX5 on January 29, 2006, 03:27:53 AM
Hi every body. I found this site by way of www.dirtrider.net and seeing as how I just picked up a 2001 KX500 I figure this is the place to be. In addition this site seems to be renowned as a K5 owners site.

I previously had a 91 KX250 for some time and had sold it and was planning to pick up a 2006 bike. This was until I came across a 2001 KX500 that was in great shape, but just needed some TLC.  I picked the bike for $1850 canadian.  The only real thing wrong with it is a couple of cracks in the exhaust ports, which to me are no big deal and can be remedied by way of a sleeve or welded, rebored and replated.

I hope to you use this site and your guys experience and knowledge in my project 2001 KX500. When I get this under way I'll post up some pics and what not. For now I'm glad to be aboard and I can't wait to feel the arm stretching power that this bike has to offer.

Well I guess it would be easier to say what am I not doing to it.  Here is a pic of the bike as it stands now:

Bottom end will be send for checkup and service if needed. Top end will be sent to eric gore for 520 big bore and porting (mobetter) and fresh topend.  New graphics, 93 250 rear fender, bars and rubber bushings, levers, grips, steel sprockets, oring chain, boyseen dual stage reeds etc etc.  Going through every nut and bolt on the bike. Replace the oem ones missing, have to repair a couple of rad mounts, the upper pipe mount, replace gear side foot peg mounts.

That almost all of it lol.  The bike is in over all solid condition, but the previous owner really abused it and rode it and used it until it broke and he coulden't use it no more. But I know the guy who owned it before him babied it.  I want to make it look like a brand new 2001 KX500 and run better and stronger. I have about 3 months I'm giving myself to complete this project. Big part is $$ and spreading the expense out.

I plan on doing the engine work first. Then as I start to put the bike together I'll get the parts as I need them.
