kx250f frame
« on: October 19, 2011, 03:29:11 AM »
whats going on guys. i came the the decision to pull the trigger and do the 250f/500 build.  i have a quick question which will decide how i go about the build. the bike will be mx'd most of the time. in my eyes the easyiest build ive seen would be to just cut the cradle and weld it to the new 250f frame. my concern is that i have read its front heavy and that scares the crap out of me lol. thats all i need is to hit a 90 foot double and nose it. i guess im just looking for some reasurence that the build is going to do well on the mx track. if not im just gonna keep the bike original like i have ben racing it. so any input from guys that have gone this route would be greatly appriciated. thanks fellas

if your going to use a steel frame kx250f why not use a 250 2t its much easier 99-02 works, i have 1. flyinhawian has done an 04 but you could use a much later chassis up to 08 kx250 2t. i have only done small jumps on my 99-02 but all seems ok. i have yet to have it over some biguns. but lets face it you got a hell of a lot of panic rev on a 500 to pull the front back up . good luck with what ever you decide

good point. im willing to go either way. i just felt like there is more work with the 250ts conversion. the 250f seems like cut, weld, and your on your way and of course getting a pipe to fit.

take a look at my build thread http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,8032.0.html
imo the 99-02 250 2t is the easiest by far followed by the 04-08

There is no major cutting of the frame with the steelies. Move the front motor mounts and on the 03/04s the head stay mount should be centered with the head for petcock clearance. Pretty easy and straight forward. Use a Service Honda pipe or a modded CR500 pipe.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

so the head stay only has to be took off for the 03/04's 250 frame to work or am i understanding this rong.

on the 99-02 you need the modify the head (cut the head stay mount off) and make new head stay at the front. the 03-08 has the head stay at the back. no sure of how its done im flyinghawaiian can shead some light

if you are set on using a 250 2t chassis then the easiest is the 99-02. my approach is this, i spent alot of time and money on the engine so when i get bored of the 99-02 chassis i will pull the engine and put it in another chassis possible a later 250 2t or maybe an af. what i am saying is if you build a bike you can always change your mind later

if the 99-02 is the easies build than thats the route im going. i have alot of time just not a lot of money lol. im having a hard time finding a roller so im just gonna buy a frame of ebay and build it from the ground up. probably take me a year or so but i sure will shed a tear when its done lol.

if you have complete 500 donor bike you can use alot of stuff of that i.e the wheels, swing arm brakes ect. there are guys on here that know more than me about that route but i do know you can use a fair bit of the 500. come on get it started i love to see other people builds. i will answer any  questions you ask as long as you show us loads of pics of the build, i like pics. only joking but i do like pics

I agree that the 99-02 would be a little easier. Plus there seem to be more rollers or donor bikes available from those years. There also seems to be alot more info out there for that conversion. Not much was out there for the 03/04. I was lucky in that my 04 250 donor was my race bike since new and I traded my brother inlaw my DR350/435 dualsport for his blown up 500. I sold off most of the parts from the 500 and the conversion probably only cost me about $500 or so. I also have so many parts in stock that it cut the cost down considerably. For the 03/04 the headstay on the head itself has to be cut down and the frame mount should be centered with it. Actually not much more work than the 99/02 chassis. The 05/07 KX250 frame changed quite abit, its narrower (I have a 07 KX250) and may be a tighter fit. I think it would still work though.
