I agree that the 99-02 would be a little easier. Plus there seem to be more rollers or donor bikes available from those years. There also seems to be alot more info out there for that conversion. Not much was out there for the 03/04. I was lucky in that my 04 250 donor was my race bike since new and I traded my brother inlaw my DR350/435 dualsport for his blown up 500. I sold off most of the parts from the 500 and the conversion probably only cost me about $500 or so. I also have so many parts in stock that it cut the cost down considerably. For the 03/04 the headstay on the head itself has to be cut down and the frame mount should be centered with it. Actually not much more work than the 99/02 chassis. The 05/07 KX250 frame changed quite abit, its narrower (I have a 07 KX250) and may be a tighter fit. I think it would still work though.

awesome. thank you for the information. im gonna start lookin for 99-02 frame. maybe ill get lucky and find a cheap roller but ill most likely end up just getting a frame off ebay and building it up. im very curious as to what parts i can use off my 500 to save a little money?

im really freakin excited about this build. im sure im gonna need a little guidence along the way but hey thats how you learn right. soo correct me if im rong, so far im understand that im gonna have to

- drill the rear mount to 17mm
- cut spacers to (45.2mm)
- swing arm narrowed about 8mm on each side (39.7mm)
- head stay removed, and fab a new one to front of motor
- cut and move front mount, bottom fits fine as is
- modify cr500 pipe to clear water pump. weld kx flange on cr pipe?
- mod tank or use shorty plug

anything else im forgetting or any type of comments before i try and tackle this would be greatly appriciated guy's. once again thanks fellaz

Im from NJ. There is a vintage dirtbike swap meet and show coming up on November 5th and 6th in Nesco NJ, right by Hammonton. They usually have all sorts of rollers and project bikes there. You never know what you can find there.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

now that i think about it i think i came across something that said ur in south jersey? in located in central jersey around the rutgers area. hmm i might have to take a ride and see if there is anything i need at the swap meet. i usually go up to englishtown swap meet considering im only like 20 minutes away.

Etown sometimes has bikes there. Was just there for the diesel truck race a few weeks back. Im near the Ft Dix area. Ill try and find a link to the swap meet. Craigslist has a decent amount of 99-00 KX250s in the 1500 range. You could part it out and recoup some money. My 500 will probably be at the swap meet/show along with my vintage suzuki PE400.

yea those diesel truck are serious  :-D... i thought about finding a running 250 smoker but its just really tough for me to come up with money like that at once. the only reason im really gonna attempt this build is i have a buddy thats a great welder and my neighbor owns a machine shop lol.
but i might have to take a trip and check the show out man.. i love to see the kx to get a good visuall and maybe pick up a couple things

Same here! Buddy owns a machine shop, he actually did some of the machine work for the Christini All Wheel Drive bikes. My other buddy welds and his dad owns a machine/truck repair shop. Im a mechanic so I was able to do everything else.
Ill keep an eye out for any bikes, I come across stuff every once in a while.
