Which Chain For Sand?

Which chain do I buy for the dunes? The O and X chains get eaten by the sand so I was told to buy a regular chain but a good quality. Which one do you recommend? The O and X are also wider and It may rub the side of my paddle tire slightly so regular is what I am looking for. Thanks.

I wouldn't run a regular chain in the sand..  That is asking for it..   There is a reason they sealed them with o-rings

  I don't have any experience at the Dunes, however I had a DID 520 ERT2 Chain on my XR 600 (628 kit)  
    for 5yrs with no trouble and very little stretch.  
  I figure it had about 40hrs. actual ride time on it when I sold the bike.
           I do try to take care of my stuff, (maintenance!) and there was about 1-1/4" bow last time I took it off and cleaned soaked oiled it.

Yes. Eventually.   Better than getting sand inside the links right off the bat..

Normaly by the time the orings start to fail your due for a new chain anyways...


Think of them as a airfilter on your car you never plan to change..

Will it eventually pack up and start passing dirt? Yes..  Better than just not running one in the first place???

One other thing... do I want an aluminum rear sprocket or steel for the sand on the 500?

if you want it to last run steel. i know there are some high dollar alloys out there guys are having luck with but for my money on a 500 i run steel sprockets with an x ring chain. 95% of the trails i ride are sand.  i used to run a regular chain and got tired of adjusting after every ride. good luck whatever you decide.

       I ran a sidewinder for 3 years of going to the dunes just about every weekend and the chain and sprockets still looked like new, I had to adjust it about 3/8" in the 3 years so once my paddle was in position I didn't have to worry about knocking a link out due to stretch just my .02.

My local riding area is very sandy, and I am running a Regina ORN6 on both my 500 and my yz450,  extremly impressed with the strength and quality of the Regina  ! One TOUGH chain !  I've tried every chain over the past 24 years and nothing compares IMO...
