swing arm material?
« on: June 08, 2011, 03:58:50 PM »
I don't like my clamp on kickstand so I want to do a little fabricating.  I want to Weld a small plate to the side of the swing arm to thicken it up a bit. That way I can drill and tap some holes to mount the kickstand to.  Just curious what kind of metal the swing arm is made of.  I ride a 1999 KX 500 all stock.
Thanks

The swingarm is aluminum and if you are good at fabbing aluminum the pro moto billet kickstand is a great stand to use as your model and if you mount it where the pro moto stand mounts it will stay out of your way under the side plate.

See how it tucks under the number plate? and if you can internally spring it then you are way ahead of the game with no springs to lose

Just an old guy that enjoys going fast, I was in the army for 6 years and bought my first K5 when I returned from basic training. I raced a yz60 from age 6 to 8  a kx80 from 8 to 12  a kx125 from 12-17 intermediate class on k5 which I've owned 3.

Do a search for welders in your area that's what I did and found a fantastic welder and fabricator that gets anything I need done in one day and doesn't seem to like money lol he doesn't charge much at all so maybe an internet search will pan out :)
