Iron Butt Association.
http://www.ironbutt.com/about/default.cfm

I was wondering if any members have done any of the rides associated with the Iron Butt Association.  My riding friend wants to do the SaddleSore 1000 but I was thinking we should combine the ride into a SaddleSore 1000 AND the BunBurner 1500.  After a 1000 mile ride what's a mere 500 more miles?

Here's 2 ways to get to San Antonio.

Okc I- 44 to US-281 to San Antonio 7 hrs 52 min / 476.57 miles

Okc I- 35S to San Antonio 7hrs 31 min / 467.07 miles

The route below is 1000.45 miles.  We might have to drive around to make sure we get
a full 1000 miles, we need an eye witness for departure and one for the completion of the ride.

a  6301 N Kelley Ave, Oklahoma City, OK 73111-7406

b  San Antonio, TX

c  Fortworth, TX

d  Wichita Falls, TX

e  Mustang, OK

f  3131 nw 38, Oklahoma City,OK 73112

SaddleSore 1000/Bun Burner 1500 Rules

http://www.ironbutt.com/ridecerts/getdocument.cfm?DocID=1

If you have completed both the SaddleSore 1000 and
Bun-Burner 1500 on the same ride, there are some savings
for us in postage and administrative costs that we can
pass on to you.

Bun- Burner
Okc to San Antonio, TX                      476 mi
San Antonio to Kent,TX                      395 mi
Kent, TX to Big Spring, TX                  188 mi  Big Spring would complete the SaddleSore 1000
Big Spring, TX to Lubbock, TX             103 mi
Lubbock, TX to Amarillo, TX                123 mi
Amarillo, TX to Okc                            259 mi
Total                                             1544 mi Okc would complete the BunBurner 1500

Copy this into map quest if you would like to see the route.

b  San Antonio, TX

Here is a copy and paste email from a good LONG time friend of mine talking about his..  ON A KLX250S!!!!!.  I have never done one, Im more of a Sample every piece of pie there is, on my way across the USA kind of guy..

I checked the Iron Butt database a while back and discovered that no one had done a SaddleSore 1000 (1000 miles in 24 hours) on a KLX250S.  So, naturally, I decided I should be the first.
>
> I told Wally a few weeks ago that I was going to go for it on the KLX and he said he would like to go along, too (on his Beemer).  He hadn't done an Iron Butt ride before.  (I did a SaddleSore 1000 on my 2001 KLR in 2003).  He suggested that we also do a Bun Burner 1500 (1500 miles in 36 hours).  I, being very easily influenced, immediately agreed.  There were no KLX250S's listed for the BB1500, either.
>
> This ride was going to be a twofer.  It's possible while doing a BB1500 to also to a SS100.  It's just necessary to complete the 1000 mile part in 24 hours.
>
> There is very little spare time on these rides.  Basically, you have to ride, ride, ride.  What kills the speed averages is the stopped time.  We had 10 stops on the SS1000 part of the ride.  Assume a gas/pee/drink stop takes 18 minutes.  That is 3 hours!  Three hours in a 24 hours is a big chunk of time that's not available for riding.  It takes some planning (and sticking to the plan) for everything to work.
>
> I "streetified" the KLX a bit.  I took the nobbatars off and put on some more street oriented wiener skins (Shinko 705's).  I upped the gearing one tooth on the C/S.  Stock is 14/42.  After the 351 kit I reduced the rear to 39 for 14/39.  for this ride I was 15/39.  I bought a handle bar mount windshield that I found on Craig's list for $15.00.  It worked amazingly well.  The final thing was Sweet Cheeks.  I didn't use Coke bottles, but rolled up some 1/2" closed cell foam.  I experimented some on the right length to get the best "fit" for me.  I had absolutely no bun problems on the ride.  Like the windshield, kind of amazing.
>
> I trailered the bike to Wally's in Imperial Beach.  We got our starting witness form signed by a neighbor of his who was a cop (National City motorcycle cop) the night before we left.
>
> We got our starting gas station receipt at about 2:30am on Saturday and were off, heading for Fort Hancock, Texas.  Fort Hancock is about 50 miles south of El Paso.  That was the turn around point.  From there we doubled back to Willcox, Arizona.  That was the finish of the SS1000 part of the ride.  We got witness forms for the SS1000 ride end signed by a Willcox police dude.  We then checked into a luxurious Motel 6 about midnight and got a thoroughly refreshing 3 hour of sleep!  We were up at 3:00 and on the road around 3:45.  We made it back to IB a little after noon for the completion of the BB1500.  Got the witness forms signed at the sheriff's office in IB.
>
> The KLX did well.  We kept within the speed limits the whole way, except for an occasional excursion above when passing.  When the limits were above 70mph, we rode about 72-73.  the KLX would go lots faster, but seemed happier there.  Even then, I had plenty of roll-on passing power.  I averaged 54mpg for the trip.
>
> Now, where's my Harley?  I want to make one of those macho 3 block rides down to the bar.

Fort Hancock, Texas.  That's where Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins) crossed the border after his escape from Shawshank prison in the movie "The Shawshank Redemption".
I have a KLX250S with the 351 bore kit.  That would not be a fun long distance street ride.  My friend will be on his KLR650,  I think he envisions me riding my KLR650 but no way.  I would use the Concours.  Myself and the Okla. part of COG (Concours Owners Group)  did a ride to Mt. Scott in South central Okla. last Saturday.  300 miles.  People think of Okla. as flat but the terrain changes drastically from East to West.

Or the,  The 10/10ths certification recognizes a ride of 10,000 or more miles in 10 days.
They have tougher challenges than that also, need to look at all of the different endurance rides they sanction.

Last weekend we did this Iron Butt, The Hardbuttride out of Dallas.   I thought it would be hard on my body but I came out fine.  My throttle hand/wrist was a little sore Monday but feels fine now.  I rode my Concours and Terry rode his KLR650.  2 of my friends trailered their bikes, Gene on a bagger Harley and Chris on Gene's 08' KLR650.  We met the ride group starting in Dallas, doing the 1000 mile ride in 24 hours.  Terry and I used the trip from Oklahoma City to Dallas and back as the extra 500 miles to complete the 1500 mile ride.  Terry  pooped out at 1000 miles and got a motel room.  I kept on with the other 2 and made it back to the start point of the Dallas 1000 mile ride.  Went solo after that and completed the Bun Burner 1500.  So I did 2 rides combined,  The Saddle Sore 1000 and the Bun Burner 1500.  Next will be the Bun Burner Gold, 1500 miles in 24 hours. The best part about the whole weekend......  The old guy out did the young pups.  I'm 14 years older than Terry.  He called me late the next day to congratulate me and apologized for not "keeping my back".  I told him to not worry about it,  when your my age maybe your son will get a bike with a side car and you can still go for a ride.  He didn't think that was funny.

Purpletj, your Gold Wing is the perfect bike for doing the Iron Butt.

One guy did 1000 miles in 13 hours 10 minutes on a Harley with ape hangers. Here's a picture.

Pic, one.
Only 140 miles to go.
Pic, two.
2 hours of sleep in the last 30 hours.

Great Job!

Do you have any kind of throttle controll? (throttlemeister, etc) ?

How did the tires fair?     Id hate to buy another tire after one.. due to flat spot on the rear.

Funny you mention the "old guy" out doing the kiddies.
My dad, who desert raced his entire life, Durring the Trans Am trail, was the OLD GUY..   my 22yr old cousin was along for the ride also.. Needless to say, after a 14hr day running through sand wash's, rocks etc...  Guess who the one blowing bubbles at the end of the day was..  Yep the 22yr old.. Me and dad would get into town and then ride around town, go swimming, work on the bikes, go for a walk around town.... while the cousin went and layed down,   Even to this day, most of my "desert" friends cant keep up with him just going for a ride..

Heck last weekend, My GOOD friend that doesnt come out to the desert much, showed up on his 2002 CR250 honda, thinking he was bad stuff, so me and POPS decided to ride some "Vintage" stuff.. his Bought NEW 1974 husqvarna 250WR, and my 1974 Husqvarna 250CR (mag) I restored.    My buddy didnt think he was as Bad as he was anymore after dad passed him several times in corners, etc on a OLD motorcycle, with a guy on it that bought it new...

I would love to Jump on my R1100 BMW and do one of these with ya if you were closer David..

Motorrad, your story made me laugh. It's always great fun to show up with bikes that no one expects to even be close to keeping up, and then being the boss! Even better yet is doing it on a 350x trike!
