Starting A KX500AF Build
« on: April 01, 2011, 09:26:14 AM »
I'm thinking about doing an AF for my 1999 kx500. A few Questions to start with, I'm stuck between KX250 or the KX450 what year seems to be best? are there any RED ALERTS I should be aware of during the Conversion?

I think I'm going to go with the KX450 frame. I probably wont start the build till this Winter. I'll revisit this Topic when I do.

Couldn't Find a good rolling chassis  but I did manage to get a hold of a KX450 frame, subframe, swingarm, Plastics, 2 seats, radiator, 1 front tire, 2 rear tires, linkage, guards, and a few other odds and ends...

Looking at your K5 the first thing I can tell you is "gas" or I should say lack of gas on an AFC bike.  You will miss that oversized tank  I went with the '08 KX450F.  I bought an IMS over sized tank but you have to heat and form it to fit.  It's a fine art to do that.  I gave up on the over sized tank because you will loose much of the capacity when you form it to fit the spark plug.  Other than that you will love a K5 engine in a more modern chassis.  J-Fab is the go to guy for conversion parts to make it a simplistic change over.  http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,6869.15.html

Alright thanks. I'm gonna try and do all the work myself. But I'll give JFAB a buzz if I decide otherwise.
Yes I'm gonna miss that over sized tank. but I do have a few ideas for a tank. when I reach that point  I'll be sure to post what I come up with.

Clarke "08" 3.2 gallon KX450F tank fits well and you will have more clearance for the shorty spark plug than the OEM tank.

Yes I traded for it.
As far as selling the stuff I don't need or want from my bike. we'll see when we get there.
I know I meant I'm gonna try and do all the work including fabricating parts.

Another question:
You?ve got the rear fender and seat(?) of the 500, but i guess the fuel tank is from a newer 125 oder 250, right?
Do you know if the newer fuel tanks also fit the frame?
