Hey Bigred-

Did you ever get your starting issued resolved?  Would like to put one of these in my KX/ Timbersled with a smartcarb but it has to start easy in the snow or it's a no go.

I have not heard either way, but I do know he had his timing way off.  If he had any further issue I hope I would have known.

just a thought, before i go buy this product, and only a thought as i reckon this product is 100% brilliant to have a proper charging circuit on a k5, has anyone had a problem with the flywheel slipping on the crank once set up and putting the timing out as this kit has no woodruff key, my older k5 once sheared the woodruff key and it took me ages to suss out the problem as had a spark , fuel etc,

I have not heard of any of the ones I have sold slipping.

Mine hasn't slipped.  And my bike taps 12k

Mine has not slipped but does not rev to 12K!!!! As has been mentioned before: the 'key' does not 'hold' the flywheel, it just makes it easier to set the timing in a production situation. The taper is what holds the flywheel to the crankshaft.
I believe my KX500 started on the second kick after sitting for months while I did the 'street legal' conversion including the MZB. Starts easier, runs better. Revs REALLY quick with the light flywheel set up on the street. Good strong lights.
If I did the conversion again, which I would not  do : ), I would use the MZB again.

You're right, it doesn't hold it. having said that I've sneezed a Cr500 while kicking it and sheared the crank key. Kinda neat if you hit it just right it'll run backwards

When did you realize it was running backwards, before or after you let off the clutch?

ok thanks guys really appreciate it, got to wait till i get a few more bits together then will sort the purchase out. like most my builds new parts sit around for ages till i fit them. my kx5 is going into the 3rd year of its full restoration coz I'm so anal polishing and painting every nut or bolt and replacing every chipped or scratched part lol.
ps this product is what i was looking for  10 years ago on a 1989 to road register but gave up.

As far as I know when Service Kawasaki did a dyno run with it they said the curve was almost the same as stock and they liked it.  They said they would send it to me but I have to check if they did.  I will also ask Penton if they have this spec.

the loss on top i'm convinced was all from being just a tad retarded, ..

We just did a quickie to see if it matched the stock curve closely and it did..
I'd hate to take much more info from that particular run that..
as it was not  intended at that  moment for anything else and we dint delve into it.
we certainly wernt looking at the actual hp numbers /just the shape of the curve comparing torque /hp - rpm
verses  stock curve.

I'll try and scan you in some copies ,but as i said i wouldn't use the actual number at all,,
 i made no attempt in setting the dyno for truly accurate numbers
so even the stock ign run wouldnt mean anything others than it's "shape'
i just used it as a diagnostic machine  to see a match (or not)

if anything it showed  that its exactly the same if timing is set..
and likely if advanced would gain half a horse.(but might alter the curve some,same as advancing  a stocker)
 
I do need to get another KX500 set up like that,  and run more tests ,we simply havnt had time to get back to
the dyno,and the set we bought i put on a customers KX500AFX for some real world testing ,so far he loves it.

man i sure wish i would have found this info two days ago!

been on the dyno two days. nothing working. everything too rich. different carbs...all sorts of stuff.

fiiiiiiiinaly started cranking up the timing. after alot of guess work and reading some german translated to english, the numbers started coming up.

i'll go measure tomorrow, but i bet i ended up right around where you suggest. every time we increased the advance, the numbers got much stronger.

before we started, it looks like mine was set about 1/2 way between tdc and what you advise here. roughly. gained over 10 so far, and tq like crazy.

i can tell y'all where the best numbers are at when we're done.
