Help with title/sticker?
« on: November 30, 2010, 12:37:16 PM »
Ok, so the new 2011 300xc is just an awesome bike, but that's not saying anything new.  I went to the California DMV to get a title and red sticker today, but was told that I can't get a title or a red sticker.  (before anyone comments that it's not a street legal bike in California what I mean is that I want to have a title in my name and a red sticker for the bike - I know it's not street legal in California)  They are telling me that a NEW bike purchased OUT OF STATE can't be titled, registered, and stickered unless it has a California emissions sticker on it.  The bike has no such sticker.  If it was purchased from a CA dealer then it would be ok.  If it was purchased USED out of state then it would be ok.  I have the Certificate of Origin from the dealer in CT and it was verified by the California Highway Patrol and I have a bike that I can't register in CA at this time.  Any input would be much appreciated!    ted

Idaho is much more lax with these laws.  If you have a buddy it is a lot easier to make happen.  On paper it would look like he bought it, titled in Idaho, and then sold it to you.
As long as the paperwork looks good nobody really cares.  Sometimes going to a different DMV office helps too.
Good luck

Wasn't getting anywhere with the local DMV, so I went to agency that sets the rules regarding this issue. They work with California DMV to set the rules.  It's called the Air Resources Board. I got in touch with the manager of Mobile Source Enforcement Section and this was his reply via email (verbatum),

"All off-road motorcycles must be certified for sale in California, even those that are non-compliant red sticker bikes. In lieu of an emissions label, red sticker certified motorcycles must have a "C or 3" in the eigth digit of the VIN. Does your bike have this VIN code? If not, DMV can not register it."

My 2011 ktm300xc has a "3" in the 8th digit of the VIN. Now back to the DMV next week as I'm swamped with work this week.

Your lucky.
Many years ago I had a 85 Toyota 4X with a 300 HP Chevy 4.3 V6.
It was built by Bruce Smith of 4 wheeler magazine and it was built to meet California standards for the Non computer controlled 4 barrel carb.
What a hassle that was.
CARB (California Air Resources Board) sent me to a referee and he knew next to nothing.
Finally got it registered but what a hassle.....
I sure am glad I moved back home to Oregon  :-D
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

If the dmv still gives you grief, sell it to a buddy out of state and by it back as a used bike. Or maybe someone here will do it for you. I would, but I live here in the state of fun police with you.

Have you rode it yet? I have a 09 and love it. Where do you live in ca? I know of a few spots you can ride with no sticker in norcal. I know that's not the point, you need your title and redg. Best of luck.

ktmdude, I have 7 hours on the bike.  Just totally love the bike.  It handles like a dream and has awesome 2 stroke hit with down low grunt.  I live in Central California.  There are places I can ride without getting it registered, but that is only 50% of my main riding area (mainly technical single track) and the other 50% of my riding is Mojave desert.

You made it to the Dmv yet? What did they say?
Wait intel you put the sxs head on and a cdi from a 07 or later 250 sx. Hold on, the bike flat rips. What power valve spring do you have in it? Stock is yellow, green is soft, and red is hot. I have heard to adjust the pv out flush with the case with the red spring for the most hit but I have yet to try it. I have the red spring and pv adjuster is at the stock position. The more you ride it the more you will love it. Congrats and good luck.
