Bike damage report from my recent crash. Any thoughts?
« on: April 26, 2004, 06:42:26 AM »
Well, I'm healed well enough to wash the scooter, so she got a bath yesterday so I could assess the damage.  Here's the list:

1. Bent front rotor.  Since this HAS to be replaced, I'm thinking about installing an oversized rotor kit.  Anyone have any experience with these?  I've heard good reports, but not even sure who makes the best oversized kits.
2. Bent Pro Taper bars - No harm, I have two extra sets in the van.  New about 3 years ago, so never been on a bike.  (I might have a damaged tripple clamp, but too early to try and take off those bolts.  If it's twisted, I'll need more input.)
3. Bent pipe - It looks like I'll be heating my pipe up again to blow out the damaged sections.  I was even running the thick aluminum Moose guard...that's bent as well.
4. Bent stabalizer pin - No problem here either, as I have extra's.  Just need to do a little cutting and welding.
5. Bent foot peg bracket & foot peg - The bolt on bracket is toast, as it is not only bent, it is cracked in two places.  Since both the bracket and foot peg are bent, I think I'm going to switch to the IMS wide units, but not sure about the bracket.  Any thoughts?  (Manny, I know you switch your foot pegs out, so your thoughts would be great as well.)

I would really like some thoughts on items 1 & 5 above, as everything else is handled.

Also, I'm healing well, and will visit the doc tomorrow.  Probably won't be back on a bike until the end of May, first of June.  Just received a flyer for a 2-day enduro in the trees the weekend before the ISDE qualifier in Idaho, so thinking this might be a good event to get tuned up.  Probably less than 80 miles each day, and in the trees, so not too fast.  Also checking into helping to chase ride the qualifier, as probably too soon to try and race this kind of two day event.  Oh well, at least I'm not riding the couch anymore.  Even did a little shooting last Friday with the boy.  The guns needed a good workout anyway, and even had time to clean all the pistols.  I'll clean all the rifles tonight just in time to watch the grass grow a little taller...Ugh.

Thanks for your input.

I can only partially help you with #1
One of the guys I ride with has '96 YZ 250.  He transplanted the front brake setup from a TTR600 to it(larger diameter rotor).  He also added a braided steel line.  I had the opportunity to ride it a a week ago.  He likes powerful front brakes and is pleased with the increase in stopping performance.  My thoughts after riding it:  One finger is all you better use!  I too like powerful brakes but these were almost scary.  If you take the time to get used to it it would probably be okay.  I just worry about the panic grab and the subsequent high-side/endo :(

I have the oversized tusk rotor on mine.  Quality seems fine and the front brake will actually slow the bike the down now.

I guess you should have welded the peg bracket!

You and the ground gotta quit meeting like that

The minus of the oversize it it's more prone to rocks but will help stop the maching better. A steel braided line will work wonders on a stock rotor also.

I run the IMS Pro Series on some of my bikes and love then. I have a set of IMS Superstock pegs on the 500 which are good but I like the Pro series better for the added boot grip from sharper teeth.
