With enough time and effort you might be able to make it fit but I think you would be far better off trying to find the correct pipe for your bike.
The K5 pipe takes a few twists and turns that the 250 pipes did not.
According to the book, only the 85 KX500 pipe will fit.
However, I suspect that a few others years would be much easier to adapt over.
I know someone on this forum knows for sure....

The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

any 89-04 fmf or pro circuit pipe will fit with a bit of kno0w how for the mounts.i had 89-04 fmf gnarly torque on my 86, ran hard.pro circuit do a platinum pipe for 86 k5 which is a mid top pipe(pk86500p)or specify gnarly desert from fmf for their top end option(020038) or for low end gnarly torque (020055). hth.K.
And lo, I did loft the front wheel and carried it forth to the unbelievers, and cast it down before them and said unto them ''look now upon the might of my throttle control ye pitiful cretinous ones''
And the unbelievers did quake in their boots....
