1990 K5 into a 2006 KXF 250 frame...
« on: October 24, 2010, 10:35:11 AM »
Will it work? I've seen post's up here on newer 250f frames... I'm not sure about the 2006 frame. I can get one for pretty cheap off a guy that blew up his motor. Is it worth it for me to try? or should i wait and get a 450 frame? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

In a 450 frame is easyer by what i've heard.
And Your frame is the same as mine 07 and a 08.

cool thanks Dutch

I picked up some parts today. Got a 06 250f Chassis, swing arm, linkage, sub frame, air box, seat, a rear shock, and a box of bolts and miscalanious other stuff. the rear shock has been rebuilt by pro circuit with some sort of "Bigger Bladder"? I'm not sure. but any way got all this stuff for $400 bucks off craigslist. Going to pick up a set of almost new forks off a 09 250f tomorow for $350. Is the rear shock much different from 06-09? any way the project has finally started for me! I'm so STOKED.

I have a fully tricked out 1990 K5 right now but i'm thinking i don't want to rob the engine out of it. Thinking about pickin up another one for the AF so i won't have any down time on my ridding...

I'm planning on posting picks of the whole project and my progress, although it may take some time.

Thanks JFAB for the advise on the phone this morning. I can't wait to get this stuff sent down to you for your magic touch! haha

Some of the big Parts I need still:
Wheels, tripple clamps, handle bars, radiators

Make sure that you get a 450 rear wheel. The 250 is a skinny one.  Post lots of pics.

Please!    Take your time and do it right the first time

The kxf450 doesn't have 18" wheel the klx450 has.

If it's right your kx500 has a 19" and 2.15" wide rim, the same as a kxf 450.
Your kxf250 has a 1.85 rim like the kx125, because it's a 125 more or less.
You could use the 500 rim if it looks nice.

The biggest difference in 06-10 suspension is the dlc coating in 09 if I'm correct.
The bigger blader is a plus in heat build up in the shocker.

.... but it would make me happy if you'd sell the TYracing tank and pipe to me.

yeah :| what is different from the 1990 engine to the 2004? i found a 04 bike around here that is really clean i was thinking about getting for the motor. Mine runs good but it is 14 years older... I don't know if i would really get much by parting my bike out if i used its engine. I also already put 1200 bucks into the suspenion on the 1990 with 99 forks and shock. I don't know its a ketch 22... I'm still undecided. It would be sweet to have 2 kx 500's in the garage though.

Keep your 500 the way it is and find another engine for the build.  That bike is way too nice to take apart.  I am glad that I kept my Kx500 and found another engine for my conversion.  They are two very different bikes, when completed.

I have a complete 1991 engine with carb and electronics, I'll sell ya for $700.  It starts right up and runs great, but when I looked at the power valves...... they are GONE!  The previous owner must have removed them.

You could probably find a whole bike though for about $1000, take out the engine and sell off what you don't need.

Keep building and collecting what you need

I agree with Ryan that is one sweet K5. The way it's put together would cost alot to replicate, not to mention the Hank III sticker.  :-D

(Girl friends orders...) As soon as i get the cash i will be able to send the frame down to JFAB's place  CAN'T WAIT!!!

So are those forks from a 450? they were DLC coated from  07 on. not sure what year they DLC coated the 250f Showas, they weren't in 08 but my 11 are. You could use all 450 forks (provided you have the triples as well) and the shock. Many people that race are using the 250f components and setting them up for the 450 (Showa) they claim they make a world of difference. The other thing I think I would do is get a 450 swingarm, they are a couple of inchs longer, I'm contemplating trying one on my 250/250f conversion. I need to look at a 250f/500 conversion sometime cause I can't hardly believe that it fits, the 250 motor was a treat getting in there.
