i hope your not going to ride that nice bike. Put it in your living room to look at every day.

Ahh hell! You and my co worker(a pumpkin rider) give me grief for making it too nice LOL! My dad restores 70's era dirt bikes and his bug bit me with my KX5!

I guess I just wanted to make something out of it that I have never seen on a K5. It is fun for sure! The suspension work is going to be the priciest part of this build, but trust me... I WILL be spanking 450's and 520's....

And yes, I thought of a way to hang it up in my living room at one point lol

Up dates?

Well, not really. Money is tight right now. Have been using side job money to pay for stuff as I go. I am getting ready to TIG up my sub frame where the chain rubs them. Then have it powder coated chrome.

I found the Japanese symbol for POWER, and having a local sign shop make me some decals. Plan on putting them on the black radiator guards, should look sweet!

I just ordered new cables, grips, and levers today.

Then all I have to do is shell out some cash for re-spring/re-valving of my suspension. Hopefully be done by XMAS, for a snow ride!!! :-D

2 years to get to this point? Where has the time gone??? Re-valved and re-sprung suspension done by a local susp. guru. All I need is number plates and radiator shrouds.

Keep it going as best you can! There needs to be more completed KX500 rebuilds out on the dirt, and less builds still sitting in the garage being rubbed with a diaper! :-D(ode to ferris beauler's day off, remember the farrari :-) ) I am as guilty as the next man though....
As I sit here at my work desk pretending to be busy writing manuals but really looking on kx riders, two guys on dirtbikes just flew by on the snomobile trail outside the shop!!!!!!!!!! bastards! It's frickin 20 degrees outside!!!  Can't blame them though, I should be out there too!! work sucks!

Couple new pics. Had a friend TIG the worn down spot on the subframe where the chain wears on the subframe. I wanted to mock it up and check clearances before I sent the subframe to the powder coater. What do you think?

you should weld a thin steel plate the the subframe so the chain will hit that

Can't weld steel to aluminum.

I have a thin piece of STAINLESS STEEL. rivited (with stainless rivits). to the subframe..

Looks pretty, doesnt rust.  and protects the subframe.. as one nice property of stainless, the more you rub on it, the harder it gets...

I wanted to avoid riveting a piece to the sub frame, so I had a piece of aluminum welded into the subframe.  A little more strength, just wondered what ya'll think of the clearance between the chain and the thicker piece of sub frame..

I tried alum before I went to stainless...  In one H&H race I wore through it and the subframe, and could see inside the subframe...   Keep an eye on it

martinfan30, check out this post of the subframe mod I posted a while back: http://www.kxriders.com/forums/index.php/topic,7384.msg56415.html#msg56415

Stainless steel is the best thing to use for this application.
