04 KX500 value
« on: September 11, 2010, 05:44:59 AM »
If a fella bought an 04 KX500 off the showroom, ran it enough to break it in and check for problems, drained all fluids, and put it on display, what would it be worth today ?

Compared to todays 450's there is not much demand for a 500 2 stroke anymore. That's bad newsfor the seller and great for a buyer. On the other hand a "like new" KX500 is like an old muscle car
that is in pristine shape. Worth alot more to the right person. Im sure people here at this sight will pay more than the average Joe for obvious reasons.
I bought my 01 K5 in 02 as leftover. I watched the price slowly come down from the dealer showroom throughout the summer. Not much demand in Northeast for one of these. I finally broke and signed the papers at $4500 it started somewhere in the high 5s. I compared KX250 which was over 6k.  It might have come down even more but Fall weather was setting in and it was time to ride and I had to have it.
Im thinkin you could get somewhere in the mid 3s if it is as good as you say.
Your best bet is a buyer that is looking for that specific bike. They will truly appreciate the value of it.

So far it'd be worth something between priceless and mid 3k...
A new KX500AF is 11.5k .....

What are the chances there will be a return of the big 2 smokes?
Assuming there is very little chance, then won't  this hypothetical KX500
increase in value?

What are the chances we will ever be able to buy a 70-74 hp
224 lb offroad/motocross bike? The only one even close is also out of
production - the Husaberg FE650E - it's got the HP but is 239 lb....

You can't compare AF to that, even though I think the AF is overpriced. Well I guess If I was in the market for a slightly used excellent condition 04 KX500, I would pay up to $3000, but i am A KX500 kind of guy.
The average bike guy would probably see that bike as  a  6yr old dinosaur technology and might not want to spend that much on it regardless of condition. dirtbikes don't usualy increase in value with age. I was just offered an 06 CRF450 in excellent shape for $2500.  Deals like that are making it harder to put a real value on the K5.
How much would you pay for it ?? probably more than the average Joe
Im sticking with the low to mid 3s
