KX 500 supermotard. (cooling problems).
« on: October 02, 2010, 10:07:59 AM »
Hey guy's,
I ran a trackday on my '93 500 and it pushed alot of the coolant out the overflow. I had a small catch container, but it wasn't enough. In the dirt I've never had this problem. I pressure tested the cooling system up to 17psi with no leak down. I ran a 24:1 ratio on the road course. Any help would be appreciated.

LP coolant is good, i like engine ice.if your rads are in good condition i would try a 1.6 cap. i think 1.1 is stock. maybe go up one on the main.

Supermotard is as pretty demanding application on an MX based engine. I think you might simply need some bigger radiators ? (If all else mechanical checks out well). How big is the track, and what speeds and rpm's do you average ? Might be better to ask this question over in the S/M forum...

There are alot of issue the K5 cooling systems has. Air bubbles is one, If the motor is not geared right it will over heat. Put a higher rated cap and see what happens.

Thanks fellers, for all the advice.  I went up to a 170 main and ran it full tilt for about 5miles on the public asphalt. I didn't experience any overflow. But this is not the same as a 15minute session on a 1.2 mile track. I am going to get a higher pressure cap for sure. If all fails, then it looks like a set of those radiators will be next.

Maybe this can help, 30% bigger rads.

Those rads look great.
I bought a pair that are 30% over sized except they were made in (GULP) China!
With the exception that they messed up all the mounting hole sizes the radiators work flawless and look great.
No over heating problems with 50/50 and a stock cap.
The four stroke engine: That's one stroke for producing power and three for wearing the engine out.

I do believe that when ran on the road as a daily bike, the common consensus is that you will net to jet a little richer, which helps temp wise and with oil. Also, give her a good blip when downshifting when slowing down, cos if it aint pinned its getting no oil.
And lo, I did loft the front wheel and carried it forth to the unbelievers, and cast it down before them and said unto them ''look now upon the might of my throttle control ye pitiful cretinous ones''
And the unbelievers did quake in their boots....
