I think the everybody has answered pretty d**n efficiently. In short, no, nothing is like or will ever be like the KX500.

As far as boots go: I use AXO RC-5. Very nice, removable foot thingy. :-) Will not ride without them. I usally end up buying like 2 per year, I kill those things. And, I used Alpinestars for a few years before and found that the quality is just the same for $320 when I can get the AXO for usally around $220.

OK,no I dont think in a short drag race any thing is faster or accelerates as fast. But as far as top speed heres some averages in a test a few years ago..Husaberg 650-103.6mph...KX500-107.6mph...KTM 540(big bore kit, other bikes had mods to)-109.1mph...Honda XR650-112.0mph.These were averages,on one run the XR got 122.0mph!This was on a dry lake bed and wind was a facter, but theser were the results they had.But for brute acceleration Id say the KX is KING!

The problem with that test you're quoting - I read it also - is that the modded bikes have had fenders cut down, shrouds removed etc... Top speed there is no replacement for displacement ;) HOWEVER... I a real world race situation there are turns and the XR doesn't turn very well. I think the KX500 is in a class all by itself.

Don't forget the KTM 380, it will definately give the KX a run for its $$$$$$$ up to 80mph. It does not compare though if you are looking for torque. I had one with lots of motor mods that would beat 500's in a drag race, but it never had the mile wide power band that the big 500 has. It felt like ridding a 125 on steroids, quick revving with a narrow powerband.

Oh ya the CR 500 will run with the KX, but again it does not have as wide a powerband either.

Yea your right, the power band is perfect, i was riding with my friend, and he has a rm 125..and he has to shift so fast..we went on the roads he was in 6th gear by the time i was just shifting into 3rd and i flew past him lol, poor guy...as for torque, I dont think there could be any more torque...I think i have too much torque...I cant get traction anywhere...if u could tubb out dirtbikes i would, lol I need a wider tire i guess  :?

My 520 has the spread of power like the kx but not the same peak, I think if I could combine my modded 380 and 520 I would get a 500 except it would have a more modern chassis & suspension. :)

This bike to me is "the great altitude equalizer".  90% of my riding is between 8,000 and 11,000 feet.  I am guessing a 2% loss in power per 1000'.  That makes my 500 a 250.  I always admire you sea-level guys riding this bike with its full arsenal.  What stones you must have!
