kick start not engaging

Hello everyone. I just had the 86 KX250 motor apart for new bearings and seals, all went well and all the internals look fine. I have not reinstalled the engine to the frame but in my excitment of having a "new motor"  I just tried to push the kicker down by hand slowly to move a little oil around the new parts. the kicker will move down easily not engaging anything. It will move back into place without issue. I am new to these types of repairs and was wondering if the motor needs to be in the frame with clutch cable attached and adjusted etc. etc.

Sorry if I sound like a newb, but I am when it comes to tearing into these motors, I did have professional guidance so at least I did not attempt this on my own.

O.k. I am going to reply to my own post, I should have searched this issue before posting my question. I have found several options within this site to try, will let ya all know what I find out.

Its easy to mess that up.  I went round and round with a kick lever for a while.

Well after rolling the bike down the hill a couple times to start things moving the kick start is now a functioning member of the motor, Must have been stuck a little on the shaft?  but all is well and the rebuilt motor runs fantastic!! I am going riding tomorrow to break something else. Either my limbs or the bike.

   I don't think I would have even tried that!  I would have been sitting on the floor trying figuer out what I had installed
improperly..again...and again..
