What's your saying/motto
« on: June 29, 2010, 06:14:52 AM »
Growing up my dad taught me two sayings that have always stuck with me and has had an impact on everything I do. One is anything worth doing is worth doing right and the other is if you do it right the first time you won't have to do it again. What motto or saying has shaped your life?

There are a lot of sayings that have shaped my life and get me through the tough times.  Here are just a few.

  keep plugging away

  slow and steady

  this too will pass

  try to minimize the wrong

  stick to the plan

do the right thing, especially when nobody is looking

  forgive yourself and others
If some is good, and more is better, then too much is JUST RIGHT!  B.O.

Live today, for tomorrow may never come

it is in my signature line and I feel it the most appropriate saying I have ever heard, how many people do you know that always say I'll do it tomorrow or next week and they never get around to doing it, My parents were that way, gotta save for retirement and not do anything, both died before they were ever able to enjoy it. When my time is up I want to be able to say I've done everything I wanted to do.

Ok so another of my dads famous sayings, "its just as easy to be five minutes early as it is to be five minutes late"  I think we all have friends that couldn't be on time if their lives depended on it, I have a friend I always say we're leaving a half hour earlier than we plan to, then h's only 15 minutes late.

Go faster than everyone else, you only have to worry about what's in front of you.

Dress for the crash not for the ride.

A friend of mine, when getting a DUI and not cooperating was asked
"Do you want to go to jail with lumps or without lumps?"
I picked him up in front of the jail after he OR'ed out.
I gave him one of my sayings
"If you want to argue with the cops, do it in a court room."

And then the oil field sayings.
There are 2 kinds of can't: Can't do it and can't stay. (In other words "Your fired if you can't do it.")
If your riding with me you better come on.
When co- worker is using a sledge hammer you tell them: Hit it like you live.

This one was my mothers when she worked in sales for a bit of a dodgy fertiliser company and I kind of adopted it as mine as well.

One I made up years ago and still use today:

Try it.  If it works, then it worked.  If it doesn't work, then it didn't work. Try again.

My boss told me this a long time ago:

No matter what else is going on in your life, work is one place you can come that is always stable and controllable.

BDI, that's a good one!    Lot's of good ones.
Doldguy's signature is way cool.

My dad, when talking of his lifestyle, always told me "no one will be happy when I die!" - spent all da'money

Here's another one of my dad's...

No Matter how fast you are, someone is faster.
No matter how hard you train, someone trains harder.
No matter how bad you want it, someone wants it more.
BE SOMEONE!

my "motto" is this. learn at least one new thing everyday that you didn't know the day before. if you don't learn at least one new thing everyday, then there is something wrong.

my dads saying, "pay attention, so you can do this nexttime. i'm not doing this for you everytime for the rest of your life."
i wish i would have payed attention more when my dad fixed stuff when i was a teenager. it took me years to learn stuff on my own. if i would have took my dads free lessons, i would have had the knowledge in my teens.

when my 3 oldest of 4 kids (1 boy, 2 girls) got their own vehicles, i made them learn to do their own maintenance. they didn't like it at the time, but they really appreciate the ability now.

saw this in a restaurant last night.

"never approach a Bull from the front, never approach a Horse from the rear, and never approach a Fool from any direction"
Live today, for tomorrow may never come
