grafting '88-up plastic to a '87...is it doable???
« on: February 26, 2003, 06:14:09 PM »
My '87 KX500 is a very, very nice bike...super clean and will flat outrun anything my friends can throw at it. I have no plans to get a new bike anytime soon, but would love to freshen the look and feel. I have been looking high and low, but it seems that '88-'89 are the earliest years available for cool seats and plastic. I also noticed that the bitchin' kit Ty Davis offers doesn't go back as far as '87 either. Is there anyone out there that knows of a way to upgrade the plastic, or at least knows of a manufacturer offering nice plastic for an '87. Thanks in advance.  :)

There is a guy who races enduros here in NJ with a 87 KX250 with 88-89 KX250 88-04 KX500 bodywork on it. I think he used a subframe and all the plastics from a 88 on up KX.
A couple of 03 and 04 KXs, a few YZs, 3 PE 400s, a DR and a TS.

I've got a 87 I'm working on and monkeybutt has the stock plastic. I was told about these seat cover places-www.cosmicquads.com    www.xtreme-cycle.com    www.gutsracing.com  theyv'e got some cool seat covers, or they can make you a custom cover. I'm going with cosmicquads. Hope this helps.

Why stop there, if your going to upgrade, go to a newer 250, 250f, or 450f chassis like BDI, myself and others. It's a easy upgrade and the benefits are astounding.

Stay away from Maier plastic for your bike. The plastic is poor quailty and doesn't fit and doesn't look good. Order UFO Plast for your bike. Denniskirk.com has rad. shrouds and side panels and fenders. UFO Plast is the best looking aftermarket plastic.
